Andersen joins 1,000-kill club in sweep over Regis

Senior tallies 14 kills on a .462 hitting percentage in the victory

GOLDEN, Colo. - The No. 5 Golden Bear volleyball team (2-1) started day two action at the Oredigger Classic against Regis (Colo.) (1-2) on Saturday morning. CSP swept the Rangers 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-12) and senior outside hitter Sophia Andersen became the 24th Golden Bear to reach 1,000 career kills.

After a back-and-forth opening set, the Golden Bears pulled away late scoring five of the last seven points to win the set 25-20. Concordia scored three of those points via blocks by Claudia Stahlke, Teagan Starkey, Makenna Nold and Emma Schmidt. Andersen started hot with five kills in the opening set and Nold added four of her own.

The second set was just as competitive. In the middle of the set, Andersen recorded her 1,000th kill to give the Golden Bears a 14-12 lead. She finished with six kills and a .417 attack percentage in the set.

With the score tied at 18-18 in set two, Nold tallied a kill, ace and a block assist to help give the Golden Bears a 23-20 lead. Despite a late run by the Rangers, Andersen ended the set with a kill to win it 25-23.

The third set started competitive once again with CSP leading 9-8, but Concordia scored 16 of the last 20 points in the set to win 25-12. The Golden Bears had three separate 4-0 runs in that stretch.

Andersen finished the day with 14 kills on a .462 hitting percentage. Schmidt continued her strong start with 11 kills and 12 digs. The senior has now recorded double-doubles in both of CSP's wins this season.

Nold followed up Friday night's 10-kill performance with nine kills against Regis in her second career game. The freshman also tallied four block assists and two digs.

Starkey continued her strong start with 37 assists to help CSP's offense to a .303 attack percentage. She also tallied a service ace, two digs and a kill.

Sophomore Mehlayna Straub finished with five kills, four blocks and three digs. Stahlke tallied six blocks and four kills. Junior libero Cassie Sieling recorded seven digs for the second-most on the team.

Concordia improved their record all-time against Regis to 9-0 with the victory. The Golden Bears are back in action later this afternoon at 4 p.m. against Gannon (Pa.) (0-2).
