CSP volleyball to host WSU and UMC on Homecoming weekend

First serve scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The ninth-ranked Concordia-St. Paul Volleyball team (6-4, 1-1 NSIC) will host both Winona State (8-5, 1-1 NSIC) and Minnesota Crookston (3-6, 0-1 NSIC) at the Gangelhoff Center this weekend as part of CSP's Homecoming week.

LAST TIME OUT
Concordia opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play for the 2024 season on the road earlier this week, pulling off a reverse sweep to take down #11 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday before falling to #12 St. Cloud State in straight sets on Tuesday. Middle blocker Claudia Stahlke was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the win over Minnesota Duluth as she tallied 13 total blocks (2.60 per set) and added 15 kills and two digs.

IN THE POLLS
The Golden Bears moved up one spot to #9 in the most recent AVCA Coaches Poll after their win over Minnesota Duluth on Saturday. Concordia has been a mainstay near the top of the poll for nearly two decades as they have only ranked outside the top-10 for three weeks since 2003, never ranking below #15. Heading into the season, the Golden Bears have ranked #1 at least once in 15 of the past 18 seasons. In total, CSP has spent an incredible 83 weeks at the top team in the country since debuting there in the 2004 preseason poll.

HOME OPENER
Concordia has an 18-2 record in home openers at Gangelhoff Center under Head Coach Brady Starkey, with the last home opener loss on September 27, 2019 against #4 UMD.

TEAM LEADERS
Stahlke has been one of the most dominant middle blockers in the country so far this season, leading the NSIC and ranking fourth in all of NCAA Division II with 1.55 blocks per set. Her 13 total blocks in the win over UMD were the most in a five-set match in school history, and her 11 block assists were also a CSP record in a five-set match. Stahlke has also been a strong contributor for the Golden Bear offense, leading the team with a .344 hitting percentage and ranking sixth with 87 kills.

Setter Teagan Starkey has also been one of the top performers at her position, leading all of NCAA Division II with an average of 12.08 assists per set. The senior has also chipped in for the CSP defense, ranking fourth on the roster with 76 digs (1.90 per set).

Libero Cassie Sieling has been the anchor for Concordia's back line, tallying a team-leading 150 digs (3.75 per set) so far this season, good for 11th-most in the NSIC.

Freshman Makenna Nold leads the team and ranks 10th in the conference in points per set with a 3.56 average. Nold has tallied 121 points this season, including 88 kills, 15 service aces, 32 block assists, and two solo blocks.

Outside hitter Sophia Andersen leads the team and ranks 16th in the conference with 2.91 kills per set (102 total).

HISTORY AGAINST WSU
Concordia holds a 36-5 all-time record against the Warriors entering the 42nd meeting including a 22-1 mark at the Gangelhoff Center. Last season, the Golden Bears swept both matchups with WSU, including a 3-0 win in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinal. CSP has won three straight over the Warriors, with the last loss coming on October 30, 2021, on the road.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS
Winona State holds an overall record of 8-5 with a 1-1 mark in NSIC play so far this season. The Warriors' lone outing against a top-25 opponent came in a five-set win over #11 Minnesota Duluth on September 19.

Libero Kylie Welch has been a standout performer for WSU this season, ranking fifth in the conference with 4.72 digs per set (217 total). As a team, the Warriors rank first in the NSIC and 17th nationally with 568 set assists.

History against UMC
The Golden Bears hold a perfect record of 37-0 in the series against the Golden Eagles, including a 19-0 mark at the Gangelhoff Center. The series dates back to September 23, 2000, with only four of the 37 meetings going to four sets. The teams met once last season, with CSP claiming a 3-1 victory on October 28 at the Gangelhoff Center.

Minnesota Crookston has posted a record of 3-6 overall with an 0-1 mark in conference play to this point in the season. The Eagles opened NSIC play hosting #23 St. Cloud State on September 21, falling to the Huskies in straight setss

Libero Kailee Waasdrop ranks third in the NSIC and 22nd in all of Division II with an average of 5.12 digs per set this year.
