Sperling sets school record for lowest regional round on final day

Junior golfer shoots 66 (-4) in third round to finish with the second-best overall regional score in program history at 212 (+2)

EDMOND, Okla. - Brandon Sperling birdied four of the last five holes to record the lowest score of any CSP golfer in program history at a regional tournament. The junior golfer finished 66 (-4) in the third round at the Central/Midwest Regional hosted by the par-70 course at Kickingbird Golf Club. 

Sperling finished tied for 39th with a total score of 212 (+2) after posting rounds of 71 (+1), 75 (+5) and 66 (-4). This is the second-lowest total score at a regional for a Golden Bear golfer in school history. 

He started the day with a bogey on hole 10 before returning to even on a hole-15 birdie. Sperling hit a double-bogey on hole 17, but came back with a birdie on hole 18. 

The Golden Bear then birdied five front-nine holes, including four in a row on holes 5-8. Sperling finished seven-under-par in total on the front nine in the tournament. He finished with 11 total birdies in the tournament, which tied for the 19th most in the tournament. 

Sperling tied with Max Brud of Minnesota State for the best final score of any NSIC golfer in the tournament. The Mavericks finished in 15th place as a team, and Winona State finished in 18th. 

Henderson State's Alex Hadden won the tournament, totaling a score of 200 (-10) tying Sperling's 66 (-4) score on Saturday. Central Oklahoma's Bennett Baldwin shot six-under-par in round three and was one stroke behind Hadden in second place. 

Central Oklahoma won the regional with a team score of 823 (-17), squeaking by Henderson State in first place with a score of 824 (-16). Harding, Grand Valley State and Ferris State placed in the top five qualifying for nationals as a team.
