ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul concluded its GLIAC opening weekend with a split, falling 16-1 to #9 Grand Valley State on Sunday afternoon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears are now 6-7 overall and 1-1 GLIAC while Grand Valley improves to 10-1 overall and 2-0 GLIAC. CSP will head to Northern Michigan next Saturday for an 11 a.m. (CT) start.
The Lakers had a strong first quarter, jumping out to a 7-0 lead, securing the first eight draw controls to dominate possession.
The Golden Bear defense was able to slow the Lakers down from there, though, limiting the ninth-ranked team in the country to just two second-quarter goals, and fought GV to a 2-1 margin.
Meghan McGowan led the defensive effort by compiling five caused turnovers and three ground balls, while
Claire Flahaven and
Susie Monson each added three caused turnovers with Flahaven contributing five ground balls with Monson adding three more to go with her team-leading three draw controls.
They were busy in front of freshman goalie
Marge Lucio, who racked-up 12 saves in the cage, tying her career-high. She also fielded her position with six saves and a caused turnover.
Erika Holm finished the game in the cage by making a fourth-quarter save in just under six minutes of play.
The Golden Bears got on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a goal by
Taylor Preece as she set a new career-high with 15 goals in a season along with her 40th career goal.
Hailey Hartlage also had a busy day, as she picked up four ground balls, a pair of caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls.
The Lakers were led by Hailey Cunningham's five goal day, while Maddy Champagne had three goals and an assist, and Sydney Stone also picked up a hat trick while leading the team with five draw controls.
