Lucio sets saves record in loss at Northern Michigan

Freshman goalie Marge Lucio stops 22 shots by a busy Wildcat attack

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Facing a high-powered attack, freshman goalie Marge Lucio set Concordia-St. Paul's (6-8, 1-2 GLIAC) single-game saves record in a 21-12 loss at Northern Michigan (11-3, 2-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Superior Dome.

The Golden Bears will remain on the road in Michigan next weekend, heading to #8 Grand Valley State on Friday before facing Davenport on Sunday in their final conference road games of the regular season.

Lucio faced 53 total shots by the Wildcats, with 43 on goal as she shattered her own career-high of 12, while topping the 2017 inaugural season record held by Katie Lottsfeldt of 20 at McKendree (3/5/17).

The Golden Bears never led in today's contest, but forced early ties at 1-1 and 3-3 with the Wildcats finally taking the lead for good over 10 minutes into play.

Trailing 12-5 late in the second quarter, CSP surged back into the game with three straight goals, holding the Wildcats scoreless for over 12 minutes of play between the end of the second and start of the third quarters.

But a late game 5-0 NMU run took a 16-11 game early in the fourth quarter and turned it into a 10-goal lead for the hosts with under four minutes to play. The Wildcats scored two of their goals with one second left, once in the first and another in the third quarter.

The Golden Bears were led offensively by Anna Fisher's six-point day with five goals and an assist.

Jenna Hamann had a strong day distributing with five assists, one shy of the single-game record. Taylor Preece produced four goals offensively, and Susie Monson had three assists.

Northern Michigan was led by Minnie Bittell's nine points on five goals and four assists with five draw controls, while Josie Latosky had seven points including six goals. Kaitlyn Bridger added five goals and eight draw controls as NMU won 23 draws compared to CSP's 12.
