CSP returns home after three-state, six-game road tour across three time zones

4.3.24

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After a grueling six-game road stand, Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (5-6) returns home to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) play against Davenport University (5-2) on Friday at 6 p.m. before welcoming #9 Grand Valley State (8-1) on Sunday at noon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

Concordia went 3-3 on its six-game road stand through three different time zones, splitting games in Colorado, Ohio, and Missouri against RMAC, GMAC, and GLVC opposition.

The Golden Bears turn the page on the non-conference portion of the season with a 5-6 overall record in what has been a steady season with the longest winning streaks and losing streaks never eclipsing two games.

CSP is 4-2 all-time against the Panthers at home and 7-3 in GLIAC contests. CSP had won the first five meetings before dropping the next three. Since, Concordia is 3-1 in the last four meetings between 2022 and 2023.

Davenport was picked fourth of four in the 2024 GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, coming off of a 2-15 overall (0-6 GLIAC) season in 2023. But the Panthers are off to a solid 5-2 start to the 2024 season, with one of the two losses by a 1-goal margin (11-10 at Ashland). The Panthers have faced three common opponents with CSP, defeating Lake Erie (20-7), McKendree (10-6), and Lewis (14-10). They are led by Maddy Haynes with 26 points including 21 goals, while Blakely Malpass has 24 points with 16 goals and eight assists. CSP VS GRAND VALLEY STATE
The Golden Bears are seeking their first win over the Lakers heading into the 11th meeting, including an 0-4 home record. GVSU has been ranked in the IWLCA Top-25 for every game that CSP has faced the Lakers.

Grand Valley is the preseason favorite in the GLIAC, having won the 2023 GLIAC Tournament and Regular Season championships, finishing 16-5 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament, picking up a pair of wins to capture the NCAA Midwest Region Championship, before falling to West Chester in the NCAA Division II national semifinals.

They are off to an 8-1 start with their only slip up in a 7-6 battle at #12 Maryville. They've knocked off a pair of ranked opponents, #23 Colorado Mesa (9-3) at a neutral site, and #13 Indianapolis (16-9) on the road. Delaney Smith leads the Lakers with 31 points (14g, 17a) while Sydney Stone is second on the team with 26 points, but leads the team with 23 goals, 21 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers, and 33 draw controls. Kaylyn Cater has been the team's top goalie with eight starts while playing in all nine games, recording a 5.62 goals against average, .471 save percentage and 33 saves against 101 shots faced.

DOME SWEET DOME
A unique facility, the Golden Bears have enjoyed dome field advantage with the bubble engulfing the Sea Foam Stadium turf during the winter months. All-time, Concordia is 21-14 at the Concordia Dome, compared to a 3-7 record when the dome is down and playing at home in the open air Sea Foam Stadium. Overall, CSP boasts a 24-21 home record and is 53-59 overall in the eighth year of sponsoring women's lacrosse as a varsity sport. At one time, Concordia had won nine straight home games at the Concordia Dome, spanning parts of four seasons (3/17/19 to 2/18/22).
