ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (6-11, 1-5 GLIAC) dropped its regular season finale 11-5 at home to Northern Michigan (13-4, 4-2 GLIAC) on a dreary spring Saturday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears wrapped up the regular season on their home turf, their lone game outdoors at Sea Foam Stadium, honoring the program's four seniors:
Hailey Hartlage,
Taylor Preece, Lily Walsesheck, and
Maddy Huebner (numerical order).
They'll now await their playoff fate for the GLIAC Tournament as Davenport and #8 Grand Valley State tangle on Monday. CSP trails Davenport by a half game in the standings, while GVSU has clinched the GLIAC Regular Season Championship and the top seed for the GLIAC Tournament. If Davenport loses to GVSU on Monday, CSP and DU will be tied at 1-5 in league play.
Today's game was Concordia's third lowest scoring contest of the season, trailing a pair of games with 15 total goals, an 8-7 loss at UC-Colorado Springs (3/6), and a 12-3 win at home against McKendree (2/23).
In today's game, the visiting Wildcats, the top-ranked team on the draw in the GLIAC, won four of the first five draw controls in the first quarter but Concordia's defense and goalkeeping were able to limit the damage to a 3-1 margin.
From there, the Golden Bears would win the draw the rest of the way by a 9-5 margin, holding NMU to just nine draw controls, a mark 6.44 lower than their season average.
But the Wildcats were still able to win the goal margin in every quarter, putting up another 3-1 second quarter for a 6-2 lead at the break, before taking the third (3-2) and fourth (2-1) by just one goal each.
The result was a significantly tighter game than the 21-12 loss CSP had at Northern Michigan earlier this month in Marquette, but still left the Golden Bears six goals short on the final tally.
NMU was able to secured 26-of-28 clear attempts, improving on a .915 season average that ranked second in the nation entering play, despite committing 20 turnovers on the day compared to just 16 for Concordia.
The Golden Bears were led in the contest by
Susie Monson's two goals, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers as she also led the team with six shots and four on goal.
Cayla Jungwirth also tabbed two points with a pair of assists.
Meghan McGowan led the defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls while
Claire Flahaven had three caused turnovers, two draw controls and a ground ball.
CSP's other three goals were spread around between
Taylor Preece in her final home game,
Anna Fisher, and
Sydney Smith.
In goal,
Marge Lucio hit double-figures with 10 saves and added six ground balls to keep the swarming Wildcats at bay. She came up with five saves in a busy third quarter to keep the team in the contest.
Minnie Bittell led the Wildcats with eight points, scoring four times and assisting on four others as she contributed to eight of the team's 11 goals. Kaitlyn Bridger added a hat trick on offense while Lauren Esposito had 11 saves and seven ground balls.
