BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Brandon Sperling placed fourth individually and the Golden Bear men's golf team tied for third at the NSIC Championships on Sunday. Sperling shot 71 (-1) on the day to finish with a total score of 217 (+1) to earn All-Tournament Team.
Sperling birdied four holes in the round with two on both the front and the back nine. After hitting birdie on hole 13 yesterday, he repeated that effort today with another one. He finished shooting the same score as yesterday and tallied rounds of 75 (+3), 71 (-1) and 71 (-1).
The junior didn't finish a hole with anything higher than a bogey in the 54 he played. He tied the tournament high in pars with 39 and had the best score at par four holes of anyone in the tournament as he averaged par (4.00).
This is the second time Sperling has made the All-Tournament Team as he tied for second in 2022 when CSP won the conference title as a team. The junior has finished in the top 10 at the NSIC Championships in all three seasons that he's competed. This year, his 217 (+1) score is the best score he's posted at the NSIC Championships.
Sophomore Trey Timm placed 21st finishing with a total score of 227 (+11) after shooting rounds of 73 (+1), 77 (+5) and 77 (+5). Timm tallied six bogeys and a birdie on Sunday. He had 36 pars on the weekend which tied for the fifth most in the tournament.
Tommy Marker shot his best round of the tournament with a 74 (+2) on Sunday. Marker put up two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey while shooting 35 (-1) on the back nine. The junior finished with a total score of 230 (+14) placing 25th.
Thomas Gutzmer scored the fourth-ranked card on day three for the Golden Bears, shooting a 77 (+5). The junior finished strong with a birdie on his last hole of the day. Hunter Robinson shot 79 (+7) on day three to finish with a total score of 231 (+15) tying for 26th.
The Golden Bears finished with a total team score of 898 (+34) to tie with Bemidji State in third place. CSP was very consistent by finishing with team rounds of 300 (+12), 299 (+11) and 299 (+11).
Minnesota State won the NSIC Tournament, blowing out the competition by shooting 858 (-6) as a team. The Mavericks dominated on Sunday with a team score in round three of 276 (-12) which crushed their own round one score of 286 (-2). Winona State placed second shooting 881 (+17) as a team.
The Mavericks finished with four of the top seven golfers. Max Brud, Ben Laffen and Karson Patten all shot under par in the tournament to finish in the top three. Brud took first place after shooting 212 (-4) over the three rounds.
The selection show for the Division II Men's Golf Championships is set for Friday, April 26, with team and individual at-large selections announced. The three-round regional tournament will take place on May 9-11.
