Golden Bears claw back, but fall short at Davenport

Concordia returns home for regular season finale next Saturday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Despite falling behind 7-1 at the half, Concordia-St. Paul (6-10, 1-4 GLIAC) clawed its way back into the game in the second half before falling 12-9 in its regular season road finale on Sunday at Davenport University (6-6, 1-3 GLIAC).

The two teams had a 3-goal final margin for the second time in a row, with CSP winning 18-15 in St. Paul before DU claimed a 12-9 win its home turf to even the season series.

Concordia returns home for its regular season home finale next Saturday with a noon contest against Northern Michigan (12-4, 3-2 GLIAC) for CSP's senior day at Sea Foam Stadium, the program's lone outdoor contest of the 2024 campaign.

The Golden Bears fell behind early on the road on Sunday as Davenport scored the first five goals of the game, blanking Concordia until Hailey Hartlage scored her first of three on the day just over halfway through the second quarter with 7:25 to play until half. Hartlage racked up a season-high four points for the third time this year, her third hat trick. She also added three draw controls and two ground balls in the contest.

But Davenport went into the locker room ahead 7-1, forcing 16 first half CSP turnovers as the Golden Bears were just 10-16 in clear attempts in the half to Davenport's 14-16.

In the second half, CSP was able to get back into the game by winning 10 of 14 draw controls after the break, finishing with a +6 margin on the draw (15-9) for the day with Susie Monson producing a game-high six draw controls. The Golden Bears scored six times in the third quarter, using three different sets of back-to-back goals to win the quarter 6-2, narrowing the game to 9-7 heading into the fourth.

But the Panthers scored three times in the first half of the fourth quarter, the goals coming just five minutes apart from each other. Concordia continued to fight back as Anna Fisher and Hartlage each netted goals with 5:57 and 5:18 to play. CSP won the game's final draw control, too, but only mustered one shot attempt the rest of the way.

Monson had the team's only other two-plus point performance, scoring a pair of goals to go with her six draw controls.

Claire Flahaven led the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers, three draw controls, and four ground balls. She was aided by Meghan McGowan's four ground balls while Marge Lucio added six saves.

Davenport was led by Theadora Krueger's four goals while Blakely Malpass had four points with three goals and an assist. Maddy Haynes had five caused turnovers for the Panthers, and Maisy Latus had eight saves.
