COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Concordia-St. Paul sophomore
Cayla Jungwirth registered eight points including five assists and a hat trick to lead the Golden Bears (3-4) to an 18-8 win over Fort Lewis (0-1) on Friday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium on the campus of UC-Colorado Springs.
The Golden Bears split their road trip to Colorado with the victory, improving to 2-0 against Fort Lewis, both at neutral sites.
Jungwirth's eight points are the fifth-most in a game in program history, two shy of the single-game record, while the five assists ranks second in school history, just one shy of the team record. She also picked up six ground balls, matching her season output entering play.
Sophomore
Susie Monson added career-highs with seven points and five goals while matching her career-high with two assists. She set a new school record with 15 draw controls as CSP dominated the draw 22-6 to keep possession advantage throughout.
Freshman
Shelby Hansen's four goals were the second-most for CSP on the day while sophomore
Sydney Smith secured a three-point day with a goal and two assists.
The Golden Bears scored the first three goals of the game in the middle of the first quarter in a flurry, with Monson starting the blitz with a goal at 10:01 left in the quarter, followed closely by
Anna Fisher (9:00) and Hansen (8:22) for the early lead.
While the Golden Bear offense went dormant, Fort Lewis fought back with three goals in a row to force the game's only tie at 3-3 with 12:15 to play in the second quarter.
Concordia never trailed, though, and when Jungwirth netted her first of three goals just 36 seconds later, Concordia led the rest of the way.
The big shift was a 7-0 scoring run that turned a tight 7-5 game with less than four minutes to play in the first half into a 14-5 CSP lead with 2:34 to play in the third quarter.
CSP reached the running-time margin of 10 goals on Jungwirth's third goal with 16 seconds left to play in the third quarter for a 16-6 edge before a swiftly played fourth quarter.
Freshman goalie
Marge Lucio secured six saves and held a firm .500 save percentage through three quarters while
Erika Holm secured a save while holding Fort Lewis to just two goals in the fourth quarter.
In front of the goalies,
