EMPORIA, Kan. -
Thomas Dietel broke the school record in the 200m at the Emporia State Relays while
Arika Harbo hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the Texas Relays as the Concordia-St. Paul track and field teams opened the 2024 outdoor season.
Harbo was the first to compete as she completed the first four events of the heptathlon against a star-studded field at the Texas Relays on Wednesday before wrapping up the final three events on Thursday. She rode a first-place finish in the high jump to put her in fourth after day one before using a fifth-place result in the long jump to help her to a sixth-place finish in the meet. Her 5416 points were just 29 behind her school record as she hit a provo in her first competition of the season.
Thomas Dietel picked up where he left off after a strong finish to the indoor season as his time of 21.31 seconds in the 200m at the ESU Relays on Thursday just edged the program record and earned him fourth in the event. His mark broke Kawaskii Bacon's record of 21.32 set all the way back in 2007.
In total, CSP collected 18 top-10 finishes with seven inside the top five in the meet.
Owen Erickson claimed the lone individual win on the day as his time of 32:07.62 paced the field. The quartet of
Nate Segura,
Priestly Jibunor,
Cullen Heminover and Ashton Brown added a win in the 4x200m relay as they finished in 1:28.91.
Tess Houglum was the top finisher on the women's side as she took second in the 10000m with a time of 41:58.83. She was matched by
Cadence Tanner,
Seraphina Stewart,
Chidera Osuoha and
Mehlayna Straub, who locked up second in the 4x200m relay with a mark of 1:46.17.
Tanner also took third in the long jump while
Kelsey Thelen brought home fifth in the 3000m steeplechase.
The Golden Bears return to St. Paul next weekend as they make the short trip up Hamline Ave. for the Hamline Invitational on Apr. 6. CSP will also be sending athletes to the Viking Olympics at Augustana (Ill.) that same day.
