PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Concordia-St. Paul secured its second-straight out-of-state split on Saturday afternoon, defeating Lake Erie (4-6) 19-7, improving to 4-5 on the season.
Sophomore
Susie Monson led the Golden Bears with a 7-goal performance, the third-most goals scored in a single-game in Concordia history, two shy of matching the single-game record.
Concordia will continue its two-game state tour next week with a pair of games in Missouri, the Show Me State, at William Jewell on Friday evening in Liberty followed by a Sunday afternoon game at Rockhurst in Kansas City.
Saturday's game also marked the first career start in goal for freshman
Erika Holm, who didn't disappoint as she played all 60 minutes, securing seven saves including three in the first quarter as CSP mounted a 6-1 lead.
The game started slow, with neither team finding the net in the first seven minutes when
Hailey Hartlage scored her first of two with 8:00 to play in the quarter. Monson followed with three straight, including assists from
Shelby Hansen and
Cayla Jungwirth, for a 4-0 lead before Lake Erie finally scored with 2:26 to play in the quarter.
After CSP scored a pair of goals in the closing 1:03 of the first quarter, Lake Erie got hot in the second with three straight goals to trim the margin to a pair, 6-4 with 9:06 to play until half.
Concordia's defense only let one in the rest of the half after Monson scored her fourth of the day to stop the 3-0 Lake Erie run.
The third quarter belonged to Concordia, in a big way, as the Golden Bears put a touchdown on the board for a 7-0 third quarter, and Hansen's goal in the first minute of the fourth made it running time, 15-5, with 14:05 to go.
Although Lake Erie added a goal with 11:37 left to cut it to nine, Concordia scored four more to put the game away.
Hartlage aided her two goal game with an assist and three draw controls while Jungwirth dished a pair of assists and added a goal.
Anna Fisher also produced a hat trick for CSP, putting in four points in the victory, adding a team-best five draw controls as CSP won the draw 18-11 on the day.
Sydney Smith and
Natalie Brownfield topped the team with three and two caused turnovers, respectively, and
Claire Flahaven led the team with three ground balls.
The draw advantage, a 14-9 edge in ground balls, and CSP winning the turnover battle (17-18) led to a Golden Bear 34-20 shot margin.
Lake Erie was led by Madelyn Goodrich with three points with a goal and a pair of assists while Cynthia Saxby and Emma Rhoades each scored twice.
