2.21.24

ST. PAUL, Minn. - This weekend, Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (1-2) concludes its season-opening 5-game homestand at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium, hosting McKendree (Ill.) on Friday at 6 p.m. before welcoming #11 Maryville (Mo.) on Sunday at noon.

McKendree brings an 0-1 start to the Concordia Dome, falling 17-8 on the road at Missouri Western State on Sunday while Maryville is off to a 2-0 start with a pair of convincing road wins in Ohio, defeating Ashland 25-4 before topping Findlay 25-3 last Friday and Sunday. Maryville will be at Northern Michigan on Friday before heading to St. Paul.

Last year, Maryville finished second in the GLVC (5-1) behind 6-0 Indianapolis, and went 17-3 overall while competing in their sixth of year NCAA DII women's lacrosse. McKendree finished 2-4 in the GLVC, fifth in the standings, while posting a 6-10 overall record for a program that was established in 2013.

This year, Maryville topped the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll with all seven possible first-place votes and 49 points in the poll while McKendree was picked fifth with 21 points in the 8-team league. Concordia's three games so far have been against GLVC members, falling to preseason #4 Missouri Western and preseason #6 Quincy before rebounding with a win over preseason #7 Lewis.

The Golden Bears are 1-4 all-time against McKendree, winning the most recent matchup 14-12 last season in Lebanon, Illinois. The Bearcats were members of the GLIAC in women's lacrosse in 2018 and 2019 with the teams meeting four times between 2017 and 2019 before a pause in the series that was revived last year. CSP has made one trip to St. Paul, picking up a 22-10 win outdoors at Sea Foam Stadium in late April of 2018, and it will be their first time playing in the confines of the Concordia Dome.

CSP is 1-1 against Maryville, winning 18-3 in St. Louis in 2019 when the Saints were members of the GLIAC in their inaugural season. They met again for the second time in 2023, with CSP falling 17-8 in St. Louis. This will be Maryville's first trip to the Concordia Dome.

Through the first three games, the Concordia attack has been led by Cayla Jungwirth with eight goals (nine points) and Susie Monson with seven goals (eight points), while Hailey Hartlage has matched Jungwirth's nine points with four goals and a team-high five assists, and Taylor Preece has matched Monson's eight points on five goals and three assists. Anna Fisher has also chipped in six points, an average of two per game, with three goals and three assists and Shelby Hansen has four points including three goals.

Monson and Fisher have also led the team's effort on the draw with 15 and 11 draw controls, respectively.

Defensively, Clair Flahaven leads the team with 11 caused turnovers with Paige Nicklaus and Maddie Westberg tied for second with six each. Three players have reached double-digits in ground balls, with goalie Marge Lucio and Flahaven leading the way with 11 and Nicklaus adding 10.

Lucio has faced 71 shots while playing 180 minutes in the cage, securing 23 saves and holding an 11.33 goals against average in her first taste of action at the collegiate level.

DOME SWEET DOME
A unique facility, the Golden Bears have enjoyed dome field advantage with the bubble engulfing the Sea Foam Stadium turf during the winter months. All-time, Concordia is 20-13 at the Concordia Dome, compared to a 3-7 record when the dome is down and playing at home in the open air Sea Foam Stadium. Overall, CSP boasts a 23-20 home record and is 49-55 overall in the eighth year of sponsoring women's lacrosse as a varsity sport. At one time, Concordia had won nine straight home games at the Concordia Dome, spanning parts of four seasons (3/17/19 to 2/18/22).

HOW TO WATCH ONLINE WITH FloSports
