ST. PAUL, Minn. - Sophomore transfer
Cayla Jungwirth poured in five goals to help Concordia-St. Paul (1-2) pick up its first win of 2024, a 13-8 win over Lewis University (0-2) on Sunday afternoon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears will continue their February in the friendly confines of the Concordia Dome with another Friday-Sunday weekend set of games next weekend, hosting McKendree (Ill.) on Friday at 6 p.m. and #13 Maryville (Mo.) on Sunday at noon. McKendree dropped its season opener 17-8 at Missouri Western this afternoon while Maryville is off to a 2-0 start and will face Northern Michigan on Friday before coming to St. Paul.
Jungwirth now leads the team with eight goals on the season, netting her five goals on seven shots (six on goal).
Junior
Hailey Hartlage also had a hat trick, scoring three goals and adding an assist, putting in a pair of goals on free position shots.
While Jungwirth and Hartlage each had hat tricks and combined for eight goals, junior
Paige Nicklaus and sophomore
Claire Flahaven helped secure the crease on the defensive end, each securing six ground balls and adding four caused turnovers, and they each even picked up a draw control.
They helped stifle a Lewis attack to just 17 total shots (14 on goal), with CSP's 15-17 clear attempts, 25-20 ground ball, and 28-21 turnover margins leading to a 27-17 shot advantage for the home team, despite falling short on the draw with Lewis holding a 15-10 edge.
In the cage, freshman
Marge Lucio earned her first career win with six saves and a .429 save percentage while adding three ground balls. She picked up the same number of saves (6) as her counterpart Myah Temptleton, allowing five fewer goals.
The Golden Bears scored the first two goals of the game, with Jungwirth and Hartlage scoring in the first four minutes before the Flyers went on a 4-2 run sparked by Meltonique Bowen with three of the four goals as Lewis led 4-2 at the quarter break. The 4-0 burst by Lewis came within the final seven minutes of the first quarter.
Concordia returned the favor, as
Anna Fisher scored with the player-advantage to spark a 3-0 run, giving Concordia the lead back, 5-4. The three goals came within a 2-plus minute span of plan early in the second quarter, and Lewis wouldn't lead again, although the Flyers would force ties at 5-5, 6-6, and 7-7, as the teams traded goals into the third quarter, with the score tied at six at halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Bears picked up a pair of 3-0 scoring runs, separated by only one Lewis goal in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Flyers 6-1 in the final 25-plus minutes of play including a 7-2 overall second half scoring margin on the strength of a 5-1 fourth quarter of play.
Bowen would lead the Flyers with four goals while Daniella Winterlik had a goal and two assists. Winterlik also secured a game-high six draw controls and had four ground balls.
Concordia had three goals with the player-advantage as Lewis was hit with nine cards (seven green, two yellow) compared to just three cards on Concordia (all green), with Lewis unable to capitalize for any goals.
Both of Fisher's goals in the game were with the advantage.
Susie Monson also had a two-goal game, also adding an assist and leading the team with three draw controls along with a pair of caused turnovers.
Taylor Preece added two assists and
Shelby Hansen had a goal and an assist as CSP had six players with multi-point efforts on the attack.
The Golden Bears are now 4-0 all-time against Lewis and improve to 20-13 at the Concordia Dome since 2017.
