Monson's six point performance keys second-straight CSP win

Golden Bears even record at 2-2 heading into Sunday showdown with #11 Maryville

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Paced by a six-point offensive surge from sophomore Susie Monson, Concordia-St. Paul (2-2) cruised to its second-straight win of the season, 12-3 over McKendree (Ill.) University (0-2) on Friday evening at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

Monson set career-highs for goals (4), points (6), and tied her high for assists (2), while also matching her career-high for draw controls (7) as Concordia dominated the draw 14-5, winning 12 of the first 13.

She leads the team in goals (11), points (14), and draw controls (22) on the season.

The Golden Bears will conclude a 5-game February homestand on Sunday at noon against a 3-0 Maryville (Mo.) squad that is ranked 11th in the country and has scored 25 goals in all three wins, including tonight's 25-10 road win at Northern Michigan.

In tonight's win for Concordia, freshman goalie Marge Lucio played shutout ball in a low scoring first quarter, securing one save while CSP and MCK played scoreless for nearly 10 minutes when Hailey Hartlage netted the first goal at 5:07 on a free position shot. Cayla Jungwirth followed with 22 seconds left in the quarter.

The Golden Bear offense didn't waste time in the second quarter as Sydney Smith and Hartlage scored in the first two minutes of the period for a 4-0 scoring run to start the game. Although the Bearcats put up a goal, CSP would continue the surge with three goals in a span of 34 seconds between the 8:39 and 8:05 mark including Monson's first of four on the day. She would add her second goal two and a half minutes later for a 7-1 halftime lead in a 6-goal second quarter while Lucio only allowed one in the first half.

Concordia would lead by as many as 10 goals as Anna Fisher and Susie Monson each scored in the first two and a half minutes of the second half, and from there, CSP went into cruise control to secure the win.

Lucio delivered four saves in the victory, allowing just one goal and picking up a pair of ground balls. Erika Holm made her debut as a Golden Bear, playing the fourth quarter, picking up two saves and three ground balls.

Fisher had a hat trick on the attack while Hartlage had a pair of goals, and Taylor Preece had a pair of points with a goal and an assist.

The Concordia defense issue just 14 total shots, with only nine coming on goal as Claire Flahaven and Maddie Westberg each had three caused turnovers, and Paige Nicklaus led the team with four ground balls.

In all, it was a physical contest with 47 combined fouls (CSP 26, MCK 21), and 20 cards as McKendree was issued seven yellow and three green cards compared to CSP's three yellows and seven greens. The style of play led to 58 combined turnovers split evenly between the teams and 50 total ground balls (MCK 27, CSP 23).

But the strong edge on the draw and an advantage of 16-17 to 14-19 in clear attempts helped CSP pile up a 32-14 total shot margin with 24 on goal to McKendree's nine.

Olivia Julian led McKendree with a pair of goals, and Lexi Helms added another while Amber Hayden made 12 saves with seven ground balls against a busy CSP attack in front of the crease.

Concordia is now 2-4 all-time against McKendree, securing wins each of the last two seasons and picking up their first win over the Bearcats at home in two meetings in St. Paul.
