ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (0-2) dropped a 12-10 home loss to Quincy (1-0) on Friday night at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
CSP will continue its early season Concordia Dome stretch by welcoming Lewis (Ill.) on Sunday at noon, with the Flyers falling 14-11 at Northern Michigan on the road tonight.
Concordia opened with the lead as
Susie Monson scored her first of three goals just 80 seconds into the contest as Concordia held an early 4-1 lead just over 10 minutes into action with four different players scoring on offense.
At the quarter, the Golden Bears were up 5-2 behind a pair of
Taylor Preece goals.
In the opening quarter, Concordia netted all five shots on goal, won five of the eight draw controls, successfully cleared all four attempts, and turned the ball over just four times.
In the second quarter, Quincy's offense started rolling with a 4-1 scoring run to tie the game 6-6 when freshman
Shelby Hansen scored with only 16 seconds to play before halftime for a 7-6 halftime lead.
In the second quarter, CSP only fired three shots on goal, scoring two of them as CSP's attacked delivered seven goals on eight shots on goal in the first half, but the pace of shots began to slow as CSP committed seven turnovers in the quarter compared to Quincy's three.
By the second half, CSP's offensive looks began to dry up as the Golden Bears committed 18 turnovers including 11 in a one-goal third quarter, allowing Quincy to take a 9-8 lead.
The Hawks scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, while continuing to stifle the CSP attack when
Kayleigh Nelson finally broke through with a goal with 6:09 to play to trim a 3-goal QU lead to two, 11-9.
While the Hawks attempted to control possession in the game's final five minutes, Monson attempted to make another strong run at it, taking the draw after a QU goal to make it a 3-goal lead, and scoring with 39 seconds for the third time in the game and fifth time on the year to cut it back to two. She's win the draw again, but Hansen's shot in front of the cage was deflected by QU's goalie Kelly McClure, bouncing on the turf until it was secured by McClure to ice the game.
In addition to Monson's three goals, she added seven draw controls, as did
Anna Fisher as CSP controlled the draw on the night to a 17-9 margin.
But CSP committed 30 turnovers, of which only 16 were caused by Quincy, and held a 31-16 foul disparity although cards were nearly even, with Quincy carded seven times to Concordia's six. Quincy was able to capitalize, scoring with the advantage three times to CSP's one.
CSP hit the 30-turnover mark for just the third time in program history in the loss, the first time since the inaugural season in 2017.
For the second-straight game, freshman goalie
Marge Lucio out-dueled her net counterpart, recording nine saves to McClure's seven, while Lucio also protected the crease with five ground balls.
Preece and Hansen joined Monson with multi-goal games, each adding two while
Hailey Hartlage had a pair of assists, with Hartlage also scooping up four ground balls and ripping a pair of caused turnovers.
Danielle Robinson led Quincy with a game-high five points on four goals and an assist and Patricia Chavira also had four goals for the Hawks.
