ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (0-1) dropped it season opener on Sunday, falling 14-11 to Missouri Western (1-0) at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears are now 5-3 all-time in home openers at the Concordia Dome and 3-5 in season openers, including four-straight.
CSP will continue its non-conference schedule with four more games in the Concordia, welcoming Quincy and Lewis, each from Illinois, next Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore defender
Claire Flahaven tied the program's single-game record for caused turnovers with six as the team created 18 caused turnovers with the Griffons committing 28 in the game.
Concordia held the lead for most of the first half, with senior
Taylor Preece scoring 35 seconds into play on her way to a hat trick and a 4-point performance. Junior
Anna Fisher made a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into play on a feed from junior
Hailey Hartlage.
The Golden Bears used a 3-0 run in the middle of the first quarter with Hartlage scoring once and assisting on another, with Preece also adding an assist in helping Concordia to a 5-2 lead. The Griffons answered back with three in a row, as well, just as they had earlier in the quarter to tie the game at two.
Sophomore transfer
Cayla Jungwirth scored her second goal of the quarter with 3:24 to play to put CSP back on top 6-5, and Preece scored her second goal of the contest in the first two minutes of the second quarter for a 7-5 advantage.
The Griffons took control from there, though, clamping down defensively on a CSP team that had seven goals in the first 16-plus minutes of action. Following Preece's second goal, CSP went scoreless until midway through the third quarter as MWSU went on a 4-0 spurt to close the first half with a 9-7 lead, which they would not relinquish the rest of the day.
Midway through the third quarter, Fisher found junior
Maddie Westberg for a goal to snap the draught, and with CSP's defense stepping up, the goal cut the margin to one, 9-8, with 7:41 to play in the quarter.
From there, every time CSP scored, the Griffons answered with multiple to continue to build the margin, leading by as many as five, 14-9 with under five minutes left in the contest.
Preece put up her four point effort on three goals and an assist while Jungwirth had two goals and an assist, Hartlage had a goal and two assists, and Fisher had a goal and two assists. Sophomore
Susie Monson also had a multi-point day with a pair of goals, adding a team-high five draw controls.
Flahaven added three ground balls to go with her six caused turnovers, while defensive teammate
Meghan McGowan had a team-best four draw controls.
But in the final tally, MWSU was able to fire 28 total shots including 22 on goal to CSP's 22 shots and 16 on goal, as the Griffons controlled the draw with an 18-10 edge.
Freshman goalie
Marge Lucio made eight saves in her debut, adding three ground balls while her counterpart Mackenzie Porter had three fewer saves but secured the win for MWSU.
The Griffons were led by Sam Pruitt's six points including four goals and two assists.
