ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (4-0) faces Missouri Western (2-2) in the Gangelhoff Center on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Golden Bears have the opportunity to tie their best start since the 2021 COVID-19 season with a win.

All home games will feature the play-by-play broadcasting provided by Dan Flanagan, the voice of the Golden Bears for over a decade. The St. Paul, Minnesota native studied broadcasting at Fordham University (N.Y.) where he was the voice of the Rams' football and basketball teams in the NCAA Division I Patriot League.

LAST TIME OUT
CSP went 2-0 in their home-opening weekend against Truman State (Mo.) (2-2) and Maryville (Mo.) (1-3). CSP started the weekend on Friday with a 68-57 victory over the Truman State Bulldogs. 

The Golden Bears bench outscored Truman State's bench 40-5 in the contest, but CSP's leading scorer was starting guard Leah Dengerud with 14 points. Sophomore forward Lauren Wilson scored 13, senior guard Mikayla Kanenwisher scored 10, sophomore forward Emma Mommsen scored nine and sophomore guard Ashley Schuelke scored eight, all coming off the bench. 

CSP outscored Truman State 47-26 in the second and third quarters. Concordia's first big run of the game was in the final 2:08 of the first half where Mommsen scored five out of the eight points during that stretch. The Golden Bears also had a 10-0 run in the third quarter, extending the lead to 60-38 after three quarters. 

Trailing 71-68 against Maryville, junior guard Lydia Haack was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 0.3 left in the game. Haack drained all three free throws to send the game into overtime. Schuelke came alive in the overtime period scoring five key points to help CSP win, 83-80. 

Haack tallied a career-high 10 assists and was CSP's leading scorer with 24 points, marking her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career. She also finished 10-11 at the free-throw line. 

Dengerud finished with 15 points and senior center Lindsey Becher was one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points, nine boards and five blocks. Senior forward Megan Gamble grabbed 11 rebounds with six points. Wilson finished with nine points shooting 3-3 from behind the arc.

SEASON LEADERS
Haack leads the Golden Bears in scoring averaging 18 points per game. She's 53rd in the country in points per game and seventh in the NSIC. The junior is also averaging 5.3 assists per game, ranking 18th in the nation and is the leader in the conference.  

Dengerud is averaging 12.3 points per game, which is the most she's averaged through the first four games in her career. She's also adding 2.3 assists per game. Becher is averaging 10.8 points per game, eight rebounds per game and 2.5 blocks per game. She's 12th in the nation in blocks per game. 

Haack, Dengerud and Becher are each averaging a team-leading 1.8 steals per game. Gamble leads the Golden Bears in rebounds per game averaging 9.8. Wilson is adding 8.5 points per game and Schuelke is scoring 7.3 points per game. 

MISSOURI WESTERN SERIES HISTORY
Series Record: CSP 1, MWSU 1

The Golden Bears won the first matchup against the Griffons in 2019, picking up a 66-59 win at the Civic Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. CSP erased a 41-25 halftime deficit to pick up the win against the Griffons. 

Meghan DuBois was CSP's leading scoring with 18 points and Sidney Wentland added 15 points. Riley Wheatcraft scored 14 points with a team-high nine rebounds. Ayla Lemke added 10 points and eight rebounds. All five Concordia starters were the only players to score in the game. 

LAST MEETING WITH THE GRIFFONS
Concordia-St. Paul opened their season in St. Joseph last year, losing to the No. 25 Griffons in the second game of the Central Region Showcase, 84-71. After the game was tied at 64-64 with 5:57 left, Missouri Western went on a 20-7 run to down the Golden Bears. 

Becher led the Golden Bears with 22 points and four rebounds. Ally Gietzel scored 20 points with a team-high seven rebounds after playing all 40 minutes. Lauren Wilson finished with 12 points. 

Missouri Western's Connie Clarke led the Griffons with 25 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Bonilla scored 17 points and Brionna Budgetts added 14. LaJahda Boyland was 4-4 from the field with 10 points.

ABOUT THE GRIFFONS
The Griffons opened the season with two wins against NSIC competition defeating Sioux Falls (S.D.) (2-3), 79-68, and Augustana (S.D.) (0-4), 96-61. This past weekend, Missouri Western lost games to Colorado Christian (1-3), 79-70, and Colorado State-Pueblo (2-2), 75-61. 

Missouri Western is led in scoring by Morehead State transfer Matilda Soderlund, averaging 14.5 points per game. Most of her work has been done off the bench, with her only start in the recent CSU Pueblo game. The Stockholm, Sweden native scored a season-high 22 points in that game, making six 3-pointers. 

Bonilla returns this season for her senior year and is averaging 13.5 ppg. She's also averaging a team-high six assists, which is 13th in the nation. 

Albany (N.Y.) transfer Marie Sepp is averaging nine points per game during her junior season. Junior Kassandra Caron averages 9.5 points per game and 1.3 blocks per game. Eckerd College (Fla.) transfer Jessica Ford is the leading rebounder averaging 5.3 per game. Five out of the 10 players on Missouri Western's roster are transfers playing with the Griffons for the first time this season.

Last season, the Griffons finished 25-6, 19-3 MIAA to earn a spot in the Central Regional Tournament. Missouri Western lost in the opening round to eventual national champion Minnesota State. 

Candi Whitaker resigned as Missouri Western's head coach after last season to take the head job at North Alabama. This season, the Griffons are led by Ashton Feldhaus, who spent the past five seasons as the top assistant and associate head coach for Eckerd College (Fla.). The Tritons posted a 91-28 overall record during her five years at Eckerd.
