ST. PAUL, Minn. - The #13 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (12-4, 7-1 NSIC) hosted #21 Northern State (11-3, 3-3 NSIC) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday evening, winning in straight sets at the Gangelhoff Center.
The Golden Bears claimed a 25-20 win in set one and followed it up with a 25-19 win in set two before cruising to a 25-14 win in set three to complete the sweep. The win marked CSP's fifth straight over Northern State, and gave the Bears a 39-8 advantage in the series all-time.
For the match, the Golden Bears hit .226 as a squad with 47 kills while the Wolves were held to a .059 hitting percentage with just 26 kills. Concordia also held a 67-61 advantage in digs, a 6-2 advantage in service aces, and a 7-6 edge in total blocks.
Makenna Nold was outstanding for Concordia, totaling 16 kills with just three errors on 30 attacks for a .433 hitting percentage. The freshman was also a contributor on defense, adding seven digs and three block assists.
Emma Schmidt put together a strong all-around outing, logging her fourth double-double of the season with 15 digs and 14 kills on a .237 hitting percentage.
Sophia Andersen and
Mehlayna Straub added eight and six kills, respectively.
Teagan Starkey was effective in pacing the Golden Bear offense, registering a 40-assist, 10-dig double-double while adding a kill and a service ace. It was Starkey's 12
th match of the season with at least 40 set assists, and her sixth double-double of the year.
Libero
Cassie Sieling anchored the Concordia defense with 17 digs and a pair of set assists.
Ellie Sieling added nine digs for the Bears, moving her career total within five of the 1,000-dig club at 995.
Claudia Stahlke led the team with four block assists, also chipping in a pair of kills.
The Wolves led 11-7 early in set one, but the Bears claimed nine of the following 12 points to take a 16-14 lead. Northern State used a four-point run to retake the advantage at 18-16, but the Golden Bears dominated the remainder of set as they closed on a 9-2 run to win the set 25-20.
The Golden Bears led wire-to-wire in set two, leading by as many as seven en route to a 25-19 win. CSP hit .241 with 20 kills in the set while holding the Wolves to a .119 hitting percentage with just nine kills.
Tied 8-8 early in set three, the Golden Bears won eight of the next nine points, thanks in part to a pair of back-to-back service aces from
Ellie Sieling, to open a commanding 16-9 lead. Concordia continued to cruise from that point on, going on to win the set 25-14 to complete CSP's fifth consecutive sweep and its sixth straight win.
The Golden Bears will look to push their winning streak to seven when they host MSU Moorhead in NSIC action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center.
