Ellie Sieling logs 1,000th dig in sweep of Dragons

Concordia extends its winning streak to seven matches

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Highlighted by junior Ellie Sieling becoming the 23rd member of CSP's 1,000-dig club, the #13 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (13-4, 8-1 NSIC) swept the MSU Moorhead Dragons (7-8, 2-5 NSIC) at the Gangelhoff Center in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears claimed a dominant 25-8 victory in the opening set before winning set two 25-18 and completing the sweep with a 25-14 win in set three. With the win, Concordia now holds a 37-3 record against MSU Moorhead all-time and has won 22 straight over the Dragons in a streak that dates back to 2007.

The Golden Bear offense had an efficient outing, hitting .449 with 46 kills and just six errors on 89 attacks. The Dragons were held to a .122 hitting percentage with 28 kills in the match. Concordia dominated serve-receive in the match, amassing nine service aces to MSU Moorhead's zero. The Bears also held a 44-26 advantage in set assists and a 6-1 edge in total blocks.

Ellie Sieling finished with six digs in the match, becoming the 23rd Golden Bear to cross the 1,000-dig mark. She joins teammate Emma Schmidt, who reached the milestone earlier this season.

Emma Schmidt and Sophia Andersen led the Golden Bear offense with 14 kills each, hitting .619 and .522, respectively. Schmidt added nine digs while Andersen had one. Makenna Nold was third on the team with eight kills on .471 hitting, also contributing three digs.

Setter Teagan Starkey was effective in pacing the Golden Bear offense to a stellar afternoon, finishing with 42 set assists and four digs. Cassie Sieling reached double figures on defense, logging 16 digs and a set assist.

Trailing 2-1 early in the opening set, a 10-point run gave the Bears a decisive 11-2 lead on the way to a dominant 25-8 set victory. The Golden Bears hit at an incredible .625 clip in the set with 16 kills to MSU Moorhead's six.

The Dragons kept set two close and trailed by just a point at 19-18, but Concordia finished the set on a six-point run to win 25-18 and go up 2-0 in the match.

CSP worked out to a 7-1 lead early in the third set and never relinquished control, cruising to a 25-14 set win to complete its sixth consecutive sweep and its seventh consecutive victory.

The Golden Bears will look to push their winning streak to eight when they take on #7 Southwest Minnesota State on the road in NSIC action next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Marshall, Minnesota.
