Concordia-St. Paul women’s basketball begins busy week with three NSIC games

Golden Bears at home Tuesday night against Winona State before heading on the road against Wayne State and Augustana this weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (14-5, 10-4 NSIC) starts the week off at home against Winona State (5-14, 4-10 NSIC) on Tuesday night. The Golden Bears will tip off against the Warriors at 5:30 p.m. in the Gangelhoff Center. 

CSP then has a road trip this weekend travelling to Wayne State (5-12, 2-12 NSIC) and Augustana (5-13, 4-10 NSIC). Concordia plays Wayne State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Augustana at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

All home games will feature the play-by-play broadcasting provided by Dan Flanagan, the voice of the Golden Bears for over a decade. The St. Paul, Minnesota native studied broadcasting at Fordham University (N.Y.) where he was the voice of the Rams' football and basketball teams in the NCAA Division I Patriot League.

LAST TIME OUT

Concordia-St. Paul picked up a pair of home victories against Bemidji State (3-15, 0-14 NSIC) and Minnesota Crookston (9-11, 6-8 NSIC) this past weekend. The Golden Bears allowed the lowest amount of points in a game since 1998 and tied the team-record in blocks in a game this past weekend. 

Sophomore guard Lauren Feddema scored a career-high 12 points in CSP's 74-30 victory against Bemidji State. Senior Ally Gietzel and Junior Lindsey Becher scored 10 points each for the Golden Bears. Junior guard Mikayla Kanenwisher tallied a career-high seven assists in the game. Concordia-St. Paul had 10 different players score in the contest. 

Concordia held Bemidji to shooting 21.8% from the field. The 30 points was the lowest amount scored against CSP since the Golden Bears gave up 26 points against Pillsbury in 1998. 

Redshirt freshman forward Lauren Wilson scored a career-high 31 points in Concordia-St. Paul's 82-65 win over Minnesota Crookston. She added 10 rebounds and a career-high seven points to record her first career double-double.

Concordia-St. Paul outscored Minnesota Crookston 66-37 in the first three quarters, getting its largest lead at 31 points in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles were able to cut the lead down to 15 points in the fourth quarter, but were unable to make it any closer. UMC's Emma Miller scored 29 points in the contest with 27 coming in the second and fourth quarters.

The Golden Bears tied the school record for blocks in a game with 15 as a team. The record was previously set on Dec. 17, 2021, against Southwest Minnesota State. CSP also dominated in the paint outscoring the Golden Eagles 42-18 and outrebounding them 52-42. 

SEASON LEADERS

Gietzel leads the Golden Bears averaging 11.2 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. She is fifth in the NSIC in points per game and eighth in rebounds per game. She leads the NSIC in minutes averaging 37.2 per game, which is 10th in the nation.

Becher is averaging 11.9 points per game along with averaging 5.9 rebounds per game. She's second in the NSIC in blocks per game averaging 2.3, which is 12th in the nation. Wilson bumped her points per game average up to 11.8 points per game after her tremendous weekend. She earned an NSIC Shining Five recognition for her efforts. 

Sophomore guard Leah Dengerud is averaging a team-high 1.6 steals per game along with 8.0 points per game. Kanenwisher leads the Golden Bears in assists averaging 2.7 per game which is 10th in the NSIC.

CSP is fifth in the NSIC in scoring offense averaging 67.1 points per game and second in defensive scoring giving up 59.2 points per game. That +7.9 margin is third-best in the conference. The Golden Bears are second in opposing field goal percentage and first in blocked shots per game averaging 5.95.

MILESTONES

With a block in the Minnesota Crookston game, Becher tallied her 200th block in her career. She is now at 204 blocks total in her career which is No. 2 in the Concordia-St. Paul records. With 19 points over the weekend, she now sits at 915 total points in her career. 

IN THE NSIC STANDINGS

No. 25 Minnesota State leads the NSIC with a 13-1 conference record. The Mavericks have a two-game lead on second place which is tied between Northern State and Southwest Minnesota State. Both of those teams have an 11-3 conference record. 

Concordia-St. Paul is tied for fourth place one game behind the Wolves and the Mustangs. CSP is tied with UMary with a 10-4 conference record. The NSIC had a bit of a shakeup at the top this past weekend. Southwest Minnesota State lost to UMary on Friday before beating Northern State on Saturday. 

WINONA STATE STATE SERIES HISTORY

Series History: Concordia-St. Paul 39, Winona State 21

This will be the 61st meeting between the two schools in series history. Concordia-St. Paul won 19 out of 20 games against Winona State from 2000-11. CSP has won 9 of the last 11 matchups against the Warriors.

Concordia-St. Paul has an 18-7 record all-time at home against Winona State. Winona's last win in the Gangelhoff Center was a 68-67 victory in 2021. 

LAST MEETING WITH THE WARRIORS

The Golden Bears last faced off against Winona State earlier this season in the NSIC opener on Nov. 21, 2023. Gietzel scored the last 10 points for CSP and made a buzzer-beater to give the Golden Bears a 53-52 victory. 

After CSP led by nine points to start the fourth quarter, Winona State went on a 10-0 run to take a 44-43 lead. Both teams would then trade buckets until Gietzel hit a jumper from the left elbow with 0.3 seconds left to win it.

Gietzel finished with 21 points, 13 of which came at the free throw line. Becher finished with 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Dengerud finished with six points. The Golden Bears shot 33.3% from the field, but held Winona State to 33.3% from the field as well.

The Warriors were led by Alex Dornfeld with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Emma Carpenter scored 10 points for Winona State going 2-2 from behind the 3-point line. 

ABOUT THE WARRIORS

The Warriors come into this contest on a four-game losing streak. Winona State's last win was a 44-43 victory against Bemidji State on Jan. 13. They also have conference wins against Southwest Minnesota State, Augustana and Wayne State. 

Junior guard Olivia Gamoke leads the Warriors in scoring averaging 9.2 points per game. She plays a team-high 30.5 minutes per game. Dornfeld is averaging 8.3 points per game and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game which puts her at fourth in the NSIC in that category. 

Carpenter is averaging 7.9 points per game and 1.3 assists per game during her senior campaign. Sophomore guard Hailey Markworth is scoring 6.8 points per game, senior forward Ava Sergio is scoring 5.7 points per game and freshman forward Vivica Bretton is scoring 5.6 points per game. 

Winona State is 14th in scoring offense in the NSIC averaging 60.5 points per game, but they are sixth in scoring defense giving up 63 points per game. The Warriors give up the least amount of rebounds per game in the NSIC only allowing an average of 31 rebounds a game against them. Winona State comes into this game tied for No. 12 in the NSIC standings overall. 

Ana Wurtz is in her second season as the head coach of the Winona State Warriors. She has a 16-31 record in her short time with the Warriors. Wurtz has served for the past 10 seasons in some capacity on the Winona State women's basketball staff. 

WAYNE STATE SERIES HISTORY

Series History: Concordia-St. Paul 27, Wayne State 25

Concordia-St. Paul has played Wayne State every season since 2000. Wayne State opened the series with four consecutive wins, but CSP won six straight from 2003-05. The Golden Bears are 7-3 in the last 10 matchups. 

Concordia-St. Paul is 11-13 on the road against the Wildcats. The Golden Bears won the last matchup in Wayne last season with a 63-62 victory on Feb. 11, 2023. 

LAST MEETING WITH THE WILDCATS

The Golden Bears played Wayne State earlier this season in the Gangelhoff Center on Dec. 3, 2023. After a back-and-forth first quarter, Concordia was able to score the last 11 points in the quarter to take a 20-11 lead. This allowed CSP to control most of the game having the lead for 34:17 in the game, despite Wayne State taking a brief lead of its own in the third quarter. The Golden Bears held on throughout the third and fourth quarter to get the 65-58 victory. 

Wilson led the way for Concordia scoring 18 points shooting 8-10 from the field. Gietzel posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She went 9-10 from the free throw line. Kanenwisher tallied a season-high 12 points in the contest. 

Wayne State was led by Maya Fitzpatrick and Britney Ho with 16 points each. Brooklyn Kruse added 10 points. Wayne State outscored Concordia 44-36 in the paint and the Wildcats bench outscored CSP's bench 17-10. 

ABOUT THE WILDCATS

Wayne State only played one game this past weekend against Minot State, losing 73-70 in overtime. Ho scored 28 points shooting 8-12 from the field and 11-11 from the free throw line. The Wildcats' most recent win was against Bemidji State on Jan. 20. Before that game, WSC had lost six straight games. 

Ho is leading the team averaging 12.0 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game. The Newman transfer is tied for 20th in the NSIC with that scoring average. Junior guard Carsyn Boswell averages the most minutes for Wayne State at 32.5 per game. She is averaging 7.6 points per game and 2.5 rebounds per game. 

Fitzpatrick is averaging 8.4 points per game and a team-leading 2.7 assists per game. She is tied for ninth in the NSIC in assists per game. Jordon Heckert is averaging 7.5 points per game during her junior year. Tate Norblade and Kruse are each averaging 5.1 points per game. 

Wayne State is averaging 61.1 points per game while giving up 64.1 points per game. This puts them at the 11th-best offense in the NSIC and the ninth-best defense. The Wildcats have the second-best turnover margin in the league at +2.47.

Wayne State is coached by Brent Pollari who is in his sixth season with Wayne State. He has a 62-71 career record with the Wildcats going into this game with the Golden Bears.

AUGUSTANA SERIES HISTORY

Series History: Augustana 21, Concordia-St. Paul 17

Concordia-St. Paul has played Augustana every year since 2004. The series has been pretty tight with the largest win streak by the Vikings at four games in 2015-16. In the last 10 games, the series is tied 5-5. 

Despite being 11-6 at home, Concordia is 4-12 all-time on the road against Augustana. CSP last won in Sioux Falls in 2021 by a score of 73-71.

LAST MEETING WITH THE VIKINGS

The Golden Bears defeated the Vikings 83-73 on Dec. 2, 2023. Gietzel had a career-high 36 points and broke the school record in free throws made and free throws attempted in a game. She went 21-22 from the free throw line and added 11 rebounds to tally a double-double. 

Wilson scored 19 points shooting 7-10 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. Dengerud finished with nine points and Becher finished with eight points. The Golden Bears shot a season-high 28-31 from the free throw line as a team and 48.1% from the field, which is their third-highest percentage of the season. Concordia outscored Augustana 44-22 in the paint. 

Lauren Sees scored 25 points for Augustana shooting 10-20 from the field. The senior added a team-high four assists to her totals. Senior forward Michaela Jewett tallied a double-double scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. 

ABOUT THE VIKINGS

Augustana is on a two-game losing streak following losses to St. Cloud State and Minot State. The Vikings' last win was against Bemidji State by a score of 70-60 on Jan. 19. Augustana is tied for 12th in the NSIC standings with Winona State.

The Vikings are 10th in offensive scoring averaging 61.7 points per game and 12th in defensive scoring giving up 66.2 points per game. Augustana has the seventh-best 3-point percentage in the NSIC which is tied with CSP at 30.3%. 

Jewett leads the Vikings in scoring averaging 15.5 points. This is tied for seventh in the NSIC. She's averaging 31.4 minutes per game with 6.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and shooting 40.8% from the field. 

Sees is averaging 14.2 points per game with a team-high 2.7 assists per game. She is 10th in the NSIC in scoring and tied for ninth in assists. Junior forward Jennifer Aadland leads the team in rebounds per game averaging 7.7, which is tied for second in the NSIC. She's also averaging 10.7 points per game.

Jillian Flores Bennett is in her first season as the head coach of the Vikings. Dave Krauth retired following last season after 34 years at the helm of the program. Flores Bennett is the seventh head coach in program history and she previously coached at Iowa Western.
