HUDSON, Wis. - The Concordia-St. Paul men's golf team captured a second-place finish as they hosted the Maverick/Golden Bear Fall Brawl at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wisconsin. Brandon Sperling led the team, shooting E (142) over the 36-hole tournament.
Sperling shot 68 (-3) in the first round and at one point was sitting at five under in the second round, before ultimately finishing with a 74 (+3).
"Brandon had a great performance. He's a super good and super talented kid. He'll continue to learn how to push through these situations where he's in control and able to win some more events. We'll use this as a learning experience and be ready to go next week," said head coach Peter Maki.
On the second team, Ben Rasinski led the team shooting 146 (+4) to place ninth. Rasinski had the second-highest finish of any Golden Bear golfer and his score of 72 (+1) on the second day was the fourth-lowest score at the tournament.
On the first team, Chase Camilli finished t-20th with a total score of 151 (+9). Thomas Gutzmer was one stroke behind with a total score of 152 (+10) to finish t-27th. Gutzmer shot a 70 (-1) in round one but shot 82 (+11) in round two.
Trey Timm finished tied for 35th with a score of 154 (+12). Hunter Robinson rounded out CSP's first team shooting 78 both days for an overall score of 156 (+14).
Camden O'Malley was the second-best golfer for CSP's second team. He shot 155 (+13) over the two rounds to tie for 41st place. Justin Kohlman tied for 53rd with a score of (+17). Tommy Marker placed 57th with a score of 161 (+19) and Sam Rudolph rounded out the team tying for 65th with a score of 165 (+23).
The Golden Bear's first team led the field on day one shooting three-over as a team to lead second-place Winona State by two strokes. Winona State was able to pull out the victory in round two after beating CSP by 29 strokes.
"It's a little disappointing on the men's side after day two, but there's a lot of positives to take moving forward. We'll figure it out and get ready to go for next week at Winona," Maki said.
CSP finished three strokes ahead of Upper Iowa in third place and seven strokes ahead of Bemidji State in fourth place. Tate Carlson of Upper Iowa finished in first place after shooting a second-round low score of 69 (-2). Alessandro Trenta of Winona State and Zach Hendrickson of Minot State tied for third at 143 (+1). Sperling's first-round 68 (-3) was the lowest score of the tournament.
Concordia will compete at the Watkins Invite hosted by Winona State at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City next week on Sept. 25-26.
