Golden Bears winning streak comes to an end against Walsh

CSP will look to bounce back against Malone on Thursday at 10 a.m. CT

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (3-6) fell in eight innings to the Walsh Cavaliers (1-8),15-5, on Tuesday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex.

The Golden Bears' three-game winning streak came to an end after dropping the second meeting between the two schools at the invite, as the Cavaliers used 16 hits to plate 15 runs and ended CSP's five game double figure hitting streak. Walsh was also able to work five scoreless innings.

CSP collected seven hits on the afternoon, which included extra bases from Carter Shook, Nick Thimsen and Michael Sturek. Thimsen led the team in RBIs after sending home a pair of runners while Kal Brohmer, Shook and Jack Greenlun each collected an RBI of their own as well.

Five different pitchers would see the mound for the Golden Bears. Reece Piontek (0-2) made the start on the bump, working 3.1 innings and striking out three in the loss. Logan Shaffer, Carter Schulte, Evan Eberle and Jack Nicklaus each saw the mound in relief for the Golden Bears.

After going scoreless in the first two innings and falling behind 2-0, a single from Bryce Nelson sparked momentum in the third inning before Brohmer was walked with the bases loaded to put the Golden Bears on the board. However, the Cavaliers starting pitcher, Mason McElroy, would work out of the jam and stranded Nelson, Brayden Roybal and Brohmer in the process.

Walsh would take a commanding 9-1 lead midway through the game with seven runs off four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cavaliers added another run in the sixth to reach 10 runs in the game.

CSP had their best inning of the game in the seventh that was highlighted by a two RBI triple to right field by Thimsen and an RBI single up the middle from Mitch Klass to make the 10-4. Carter Shook would add the final run of the game from the Golden Bears after hitting his first home run of the season to right field.

Walsh would seal the deal with a pair of runs in the seventh and a trio of runs in the eighth to secure the 15-5 win.

Concordia will return to action on Thursday to face off with the Malone Pioneers for the third and final time of the invitational. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
