TUCSON, Ariz. - Concordia-St. Paul baseball (3-7) dropped a close 3-2 game in their third and final meeting with Malone (8-3) on Thursday at the Kino Sports Complex.
A strong third inning with three unearned runs and strong pitching propelled the Pioneers to victory. CSP brought the game within one score in the top of the ninth with a runner in scoring position, but Malone secured the victory with a flyout to right field.
Concordia scored a pair of runs off seven hits that were highlighted by RBI doubles from Jaden Werner and Mason Nadolney. Kal Brohmer, Mitch Klass and Noah Juliar were the other batters who added hits for the Golden Bears.
Two different pitchers saw the mound for the Golden Bears. Korey Dahlberg (1-2) made his second start of the Tucson Invitational and matched his season-high of 6.0 innings on the mound. The sophomore allowed only six hits and zero earned runs while sitting down five of the 25 batters that he faced. Matt Sherman made his second relief appearance of the invite and struck out a pair of batters in 2.0 IP.
After the two teams were scoreless in the first inning, Malone was able to plate their three runs of the contest with an RBI single and a two-RBI double, giving them an early 3-0 advantage. The Pioneers would only acquire four more hits and were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
In the fourth inning with two outs, Werner put the Golden Bears on the board with an RBI double to right field that drove in Juliar, who reached base earlier in the inning with a single.
CSP made it interesting in the ninth after Werner kicked off the inning with a single. Two at-bats later, Nadolney came in as a pinch hitter and used an RBI double to right field to send Werner home and place himself in scoring position. However, back-to-back flyouts would spoil the comeback as Malone secured the 3-2 win.
The Golden Bears will return to action tomorrow morning to face off with conference foe Southwest Minnesota State in the final game of the Tucson Invitational. The opening pitch is slated for 10 a.m. CT at the Kino Sports Complex.
