Eight-run eighth lifts Golden Bears to third straight victory

CSP turns a 5-1 deficit into a 9-5 win with big inning

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (3-5) scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their winning streak to three with a 9-5 win over Walsh (0-7) on Sunday morning at Kino Sports Complex.

Trailing 5-1 with just two innings to play, the Golden Bears turned a four-run deficit into a four-run lead with a crucial eight-run frame that included three two-out, two-run singles to come out on top.

Two-out hitting proved to be the story of the day as 12 of the game's 14 runs were scored with two outs.

Justin McGuigan, who delivered the game-winning hit, Noah Juliar and Bryce Nelson all collected two-hit and two-RBI games as all four of McGuigan and Nelson's hits came in the decisive eighth. Jaden Werner added two RBIs of his own as he picked up the game-tying single while Brayden Roybal reached safely twice and scored a pair of runs.

Gavin Rusch worked deep into the contest as he worked a career-best 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits and walking none while striking out four. Eric Lundell (1-0) delivered a pair of scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win as he worked around a pair of hits and a hit batter in the victory.

Rusch appeared to be headed for a tidy first frame as he picked up two quick outs on six pitches before the Cavaliers bats came to life. A single extended the inning before a triple opened the scoring. Jax Miller followed with a two-run homer just inside the right field foul pole to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Bears grabbed a big two-out hit of their own in the bottom of the inning as Juliar came through with a line drive single to drive in Brayden Roybal.

After two scoreless innings kept the score at 3-1, Walsh tacked on an insurance run in the fourth with yet another two-out rally, stringing together three straight singles to bring home their fourth run of the contest. They continued the trend as Benny Hymes made it 5-1 with a two-out solo home run in the sixth.

The zeroes resumed until the home half of the eighth when CSP flipped the script. Concordia loaded the bases with nobody out as McGuigan and Nelson delivered singles and Roybal was hit by a pitch. With one down, Brohmer battled his way to an RBI walk to open the scoring in the inning. Juliar added his second run batted in with a groundout before one final two-out rally determined the outcome of the game.

Werner came through with the first big two-out hit with a two-run single through the left side to tie the game. After a Mason Nadolney walk, McGuigan picked up his second hit of the inning with a liner to center to put Concordia in front 7-5. He then stole second to set up Nelson's second hit of the frame, another two-run single, to cap off an eight-run eighth.

Walsh threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but Lundell hunkered down to coax a game-ending double play as Werner and Roybal made a quick turn up the middle.

The Golden Bears have Monday off before another meeting with Walsh on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
