Golden Bears secure wild 15-14 win

CSP baseball will return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m CT against Walsh

TUCSON, Ariz. - Concordia St. Paul baseball (2-5) collected their second straight victory and avenged Friday's loss to the Malone Pioneers (6-3) in a 15-14 shootout on Saturday at the Kino Sports Complex.

The Golden Bears improved to 6-2 all-time over the Pioneers after using a four-run seventh inning to take the final lead of the game before adding an insurance run in the eighth.

As a team, CSP collected 17 hits which is the most since earning 19 last season against Minnesota Duluth (03/17). Nick Thimsen led the Golden Bears after going 3-5 with a pair of runs and RBIs, while accounting for a pair of doubles and a home run. Kal Brohmer added an impressive 3-3 outing and drove in four runs, and Justin McGuigan tallied a three-hit, two-run performance behind the plate.

Christian Morel picked up the no decision in his second start of the season. The junior completed 5.0 innings with four strikeouts on the bump. Leo Bustos picked up the win in relief after entering the game in the sixth inning, while Mason Nadolney closed the show and earned the save after pitching the final 1.2 innings.

Malone's starting pitcher, Jacob Rollson, would have a tough out after giving up four hits and three earned runs against the 10 batters he faced. However, Jackson Phelps would pick up the loss after seeing the Pioneers' final lead diminish in the seventh inning when he gave up four earned runs, three hits and three walks.

The Pioneers struck first in the game with an RBI triple in the top of the second inning. However, the Golden Bears answered in the bottom of the inning with a trio of runs that were highlighted by a two-RBI double from Jaden Werner and an RBI single from McGuigan.

In the next inning, Malone would tie the game with yet another RBI triple, but Thimsen would quiet their momentum after notching his second home run of the season with a solo shot that sailed over left-center field fence in the bottom of the inning.

CSP added three more hits to their line in the fourth inning, including a triple from Bryce Nelson and a double from Thimsen, extending their lead by three runs and the largest lead of the game of 7-3. However, a five-run inning from Malone in the sixth would erase the large lead and gave the Pioneers a three run advantage before the Golden Bears tied things back up in the bottom of the inning.

After the Pioneers regained the lead in the top of the seventh, the Golden Bears would answer in the bottom of the inning with the final lead change of the contest. With two outs in the inning, three straight hits that included a double from Noah Juliar, would plate the three runs to give CSP a 14-11 advantage.

The late rally from Malone would see them come within one run and a bases loaded situation in the ninth, but Nadolney would strike out the final batter and leave the three base runners stranded as Concordia held on for the 15-14 victory.

The Golden Bears will return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT against Walsh (Ohio) as the two teams will meet for the first time in school history at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
