MAUSTON, Wis. – Concordia St. Paul baseball (9-9, 5-0 NSIC) extended their winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep which included the longest game of the Division II Era over the University of Mary Marauders (9-11, 2-3 NSIC) on Wednesday at the Woodside Sports Complex.
Concordia improved to 32-9 all-time against the Marauders with the doubleheader sweep. The 16 inning game of the ages is the longest in the series history with the 11 inning Golden Bear victory on April 3, 2019, being the second longest game between the two programs.
As a team, the Golden Bears collected a batting average of .301 in the two games. They finished with a total of 13 runs, 25 hits, 10 RBIs and nine walks at the plate. CSP would also go a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base opportunities.
Noah Juliar went 4-10 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored.
Bryce Nelson slashed .500/.500/.800 with five hits on 10 that included a double and a triple the plate.
Justin McGuigan added four hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Concordia had two pitchers claim their first victories of the season on the mound.
Gavin Rusch (1-0) collected the win in game one after going 4.0 innings with a strikeout and zero walks. Issac Johnson (1-0) picked up the win in relief in game two after going in for the final 0.2 innings.
Eric Lundell appeared in both games for CSP, collecting five strikeouts and allowing three hits while walking zero batters in 5.1 innings.
Matt Sherman also provides 3.0 solid innings with four strikeouts and two walks.
GAME 1: CSP 6, MARY 5 (Seven Innings)
The first game of the doubleheader was full of momentum shifts as the Marauders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening innings. However, CSP responded with five runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth to collect the 6-5 win.
Mary was able to strike first in the contest with an RBI single in the second and a pair of RBI singles in the third.
CSP erased the early blemish with five runs in the third inning that was highlighted by an RBI double from
Nick Thimsen that drove in
Koby McBroome, and an RBI double later in the inning from
Jaden Werner that drove in Thimsen. Juliar and
Mason Wolf capped off the big inning with an RBI single of their own, giving the Golden Bears a 5-3 advantage.
The Golden Bears' final run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth after Nelson used an RBI single to right center to score Juliar, who notched a triple to right center the play before, to extend their lead to 6-4.
With the bases loaded and zero outs in the innings, Sherman made the play of the game after tagging the runner trying to score from third to save a run. Later in the inning, the Marauders scored their final run with an RBI single, but it was not enough as CSP held on for the 6-5 victory.
GAME 2: CSP 7, MARY 6 (16 Innings)
The second game of the doubleheader was the longest game in the Division II era for the Golden Bears that was filled with lead changes and momentum changes throughout the 16 innings. Mary led the game until the sixth where the Golden Bears added two runs to tie the game. CSP sealed the victory with a two RBI single in the bottom of the 16th to secure the 7-6 victory and sweep.
CSP and Mary traded runs in the opening inning, with McGuigan scoring the first run for the Golden Bears after a throwing error from the Marauders allowed the Junior catcher to score from second.
In the third, the Marauders widened their lead to 3-1 with a home run and sacrifice fly.The Golden Bears responded with an RBI single from
Kal Brohmer that allowed McGuigan to score, cutting the lead to one run.
Finding themselves down 4-2 in the later innings, Concordia tied the game at four runs a piece with a pair of runs in the sixth that resulted from a balk and RBI single from
Mason Nadolney.
Neither team would score for the next eight innings until a sacrifice fly to center field allowed the Marauders to score in the top of the 15th, followed by an RBI single from Nadolney that pushed Nelson across for the tying run in the bottom of the 15th.
Down one in the bottom of the 16th inning, Juliar called gamed with a walk off two-RBI single to right field that allowed Brohmer to score the tying run and Roybal to cross the plate for the game winner.
UP NEXT: CSP baseball will return to action on the road this weekend against the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles. Locations and times for the three game series are to be determined due to weather conditions.
