LEBANON, Ill. - Freshman
Lauren Sheets secured her second-career 5-goal performance including the game winning goal with 3:25 to play to propel Concordia-St. Paul (2-2) to a 14-12 win at McKendree University (3-2) on Friday afternoon.
Just a week after dropping their first-ever game to Rockhurst in the fifth meeting between the programs, the Golden Bears scored their first-ever win over McKendree in the fifth contest, improving to 1-4 in against the Bearcats.
Concordia continues competing against the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) with a Sunday afternoon tilt at Maryville in St. Louis, Missouri.
In today's win, Sheets put Concordia ahead just under three minutes to play. She scored the first two and assisted on the third CSP goal as the Golden Bears led 4-1 late in the first before the Bearcats put in a goal with six seconds left in the opening frame, narrowing it to 4-2.
The Bearcats then scored the first two goals early in the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4 with 12:35 to play until halftime.
Concordia would match the 3-goal lead just one more time, a 9-6 margin late in a high scoring second quarter when each squad put five goals in the net, with McKendree once again scoring late in the quarter with 34 seconds until halftime.
The late first half goal by the Bearcats started McKendree's 4-0 spurt that gave them a 10-9 advantage with 7:34 to play in the third quarter.
But this time, Concordia would score the final goal of a quarter as
Susie Monson tied the game back up at 10-10 with 5:18 to play in the third, as the Golden Bears kept McKendree out of the net in the closing minute of a period for the first time.
McKendree reclaimed the lead 11-10 at 10:37 in the fourth with
Sydney Smith scoring her second of three goals in the game just 31 seconds later to tie at 11-11. She scored again just under two minutes later for the 12-11 lead before McKendree forced the game's seventh tie at 12-12 with just over five minutes to go.
That's when Sheets put in her fifth goal of the game, responding with just under three and a half minutes to play for the 13-12 lead with
Kayleigh Nelson scoring on the free position shot 50 seconds later for a 2-goal lead with 2:35 to play.
In the last five minutes, senior goalie
Candace McDole made three saves to keep the Bearcats out of the net. She finished with her third-straight 11-save performance of the season, including six saves in the fourth quarter alone.
In front of McDole,
Claire Flahaven had three caused turnovers and five ground balls while
Paige Nicklaus had four ground balls.
Joining Sheets with five goals and Smith with three was Monson with a hat trick as well.
In the middle,
Anna Fisher had a busy all-around day with four ground balls, four draw controls and three shots.
McKendree, who didn't play with any reserves, was led by Kat Albrecht's four goals and seven draw controls while Olivia Julian had three goals and six draw controls while Molly Muennich had two goals and five draw controls.
Clara Andrews took the loss in the cage, allowing 14 goals with five saves.
