ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (2-3) scored in each quarter, but wasn't able to pull the momentum to overcome an early deficit in a 17-8 road loss to Maryville University on Sunday afternoon.
Concordia has wrapped up its tour of Great Lakes Valley (GLVC) opposition during the early portion of the non-conference season, and will now head to Florida next week for three games starting at #17 Flagler next Saturday for a 6 p.m. (CST) contest in St. Augustine before heading to Lake Wales to face Warner University on Monday, March 6 and #9 Rollins in Winter Park on Wednesday, March 8.
Maryville came out today and scored the first four goals, the first coming just 17 seconds into play with the next three coming later in the first quarter but separated by just under two and a half minutes of game clock.
Concordia responded with three in a row, the first by freshman
Lauren Sheets followed by a pair from freshman
Susie Monson to narrow the margin to 4-3 early in the second quarter.
But Maryville added its second four goal run of the game, claiming an 8-3 lead midway through the quarter.
Although Sheets would score again with 7:30 to play in the second, Maryville put together another string of three goals to claim an 11-4 lead at the half in a 7-1 run.
The Golden Bears wouldn't get closer than a six goal deficit the rest of the way.
Sheets and Monson each netted hat tricks, the fourth in a row for Sheets and second in a row for Monson. Sheets now has 17 goals in five games to start her career while Monson has delivered eight goals in five games.
Freshman
Kayleigh Nelson also had a two-point performance with a goal and an assist and leads the team with four assists on the season. Nelson also led CSP with six draw controls with
Anna Fisher adding five.
Senior goalie
Candace McDole registered a season-high 12 saves, after securing 11 saves in each of her first three starts in the cage, giving her 45 saves on the season in four performances. She added three ground balls.
Defensively, freshman
Claire Flahaven had a team-high four ground balls and is second on the team with 12 on the year.
Maryville was led by Sydney Tiemann's six goals in a seven-point effort, adding four ground balls.
