Golden Bears sweep UMary to extend win streak

Mulvihill and Schmidt each secured double-doubles; Starkey tallied 48 assists

ST. PAUL. Minn. - No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball (16-1, 7-1 NSIC) extended their winning streak to seven with a dominant sweep over the University of Mary Marauders (4-12, 0-8 NSIC) on Friday night at the Gangelhoff Center.

The Golden Bears will return to action tomorrow to continue Homecoming Weekend as they host the Minot State Beavers. Action is set to begin at 5 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center following the Golden Bear football game at noon.

Concordia volleyball improved 24-0 all-time versus the Marauders with Friday night's victory. The Golden Bears have failed to drop a set to UMary since 2021 after claiming the sweep tonight with set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-23.

Jasmine Mulvihill led the offensive attack with her eight double-double of the season. The senior led all scorers with 12 kills and added 12 digs. Teagan Starkey helped contribute with 48 assists in the match, besting her national-leading 13.15 assist per set by almost three assists per set.

Emma Schmidt notched her fourth consecutive double-double for the Navy and Gold. The junior finished with 10 kills and 14 digs. Joining Schmidt with double-figure kills was Sophia Andersen, who tallied 11 kills and a pair of digs on the night.

In the opening set, the two teams battled back and forth in the early going with two lead changes and a trio of ties. Schmidt led the way in the first set for CSP with six kills and seven digs. The Golden Bears led by as many as eight points in the set and hit an efficient .342%. Andersen sealed the set with a nice kill to secure the 25-17 victory.

The second set was much like the first as there were six ties and four lead changes. Makenna Berger stepped up big for the Golden Bears with a set-leading five kills. After a Marauder attacking error gave CSP their final lead of the set, the Golden Bears finished on a 16-8 run led by Katie Mattson who tallied four kills in the set. Concordia led by as many as nine in the set with the latter coming from an Ella Christ service ace that forced set point.

The Marauders had their best set of the night with the match on the line in the third. Nehkyah Ellis provided six kills and six digs for Mary, who had a 52% attack rate and 11 kills in the set. However, it was not enough as Andersen propelled the Golden Bears to the 25-23 set victory with seven kills, while Starkey added 16 assists and Mulvihill secured a double-double with five kills and five digs.
