Sperling ends fall season placing third at NCAA Super Regional Preview

Golden Bears tie for seventh place at Kickingbird Golf Club

EDMOND, Okla. - The Concordia-St. Paul men's golf team finished in a tie for seventh place at the NCAA Super Regional Preview hosted by Southern Nazarene at Kickingbird Golf Club. After 54 holes of golf, Brandon Sperling led the Golden Bears placing third individually on the par 70 course.

Sperling shot rounds of 68 (-2), 66 (-4) and 70 (E) for a total of 204 (-6). Six-under-par is Sperling's lowest finishing score of the season and his lowest career three-round score. He did not shoot over par on any hole in the second round and tallied four birdies. Sperling totaled 10 birdies in the tournament with 40 pars through the 54 holes. His second-round score of 66 (-4) was his lowest round of the season. Sperling's third-place finish was his third-best finish of the season. He also had the highest finish of any NSIC golfer at the NCAA Super Regional Preview. 

Thomas Gutzmer tied for 26th after a strong third round score of 67 (-3). Gutzmer shot rounds of 75 (+5), 72 (+2) and 67 (-3) to finish with a total of 214 (+4). He tallied four birdies during the third round with nine total in the tournament. His score of 67 (-3) was his lowest of the season after he set it last week at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational at 69 (-2). 

Ben Rasinski finished one stroke behind tying for 31st at 215 (+5). He started the tournament strong with an opening round score of 69 (-1) which featured four birdies. His opening round was followed by a second round of 71 (+1) and a third round of 75 (+5). Rasinski's first-round score was his lowest of the season and his first time under par for a round this season. 

Trey Timm tied for 65th finishing with a score of 223 (+13) after rounds of 70 (E), 79 (+9) and 74 (+4). Tommy Marker tied for 93rd with a score of 231 (+21) following rounds of 80 (+10), 76 (+6) and 75 (+5). 

Concordia-St. Paul tied with Harding with a total score of 853 (+13). This was one stroke ahead of ninth place Southern Arkansas at 854 (+14) and two strokes behind Missouri Western State at 851 (+11). CSP had the highest finish of the five teams at the Super Regional Preview. There were 21 total teams that competed in the tournament. 

Arkansas Tech won the tournament with a score of 842 (+2) followed by Central Oklahoma in second place with a score of 845 (+5). Rogers State was in third place with a score of 846 (+6) and Henderson State finished in fourth place one stroke behind Rogers State. The field was very tight all the way through with only a few strokes separating multiple placements. 

Sam Tandy of Harding won the tournament with a score of 199 (-11) which was one stroke ahead of Nick Canales of Central Oklahoma at 200 (-10). Both players were neck and neck in the third round until hole 16 where Tandy bogeyed and Canales double-bogeyed. Alex Hadden of Henderson State and Alessandro Trenta of Winona State finished behind Sperling tying for fourth place at 205 (-5). 

The Golden Bears are now finished for the fall season. The team will now prepare for the spring season. Check our schedule after the new year for updates.
