Golden Bears and Wolves tie on rainy Friday night

CSP and NSU trade penalty kicks in the first half

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (3-3-2, 3-1-1 NSIC) extended its unbeaten streak to four games, securing a tie with Northern State (4-2-2, 2-1-2 NSIC) on a cold, windy and rainy Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium.

Concordia, in third in the NSIC standings with 10 points, looks to continue its hot start in conference play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. tilt against MSU Moorhead (1-4-1, 1-3-1 NSIC).

"We got caught flat for the first 45 minutes and didn't deal with the conditions well at all," said head coach Steve Bellis. "Our possession level improved in the second half and we are a little disappointed to not have taken a few of the chances that we created."

After the first 10-plus minutes were played with little-to-no precipitation, the Golden Bears struck first in the 20th minute when an NSU player was called for a handball in the box on a corner kick, setting up Katie Anderson with her fourth goal of the year on a penalty kick.

Anderson, who has 19 career goals, led Concordia's offensive side with six shots including four on goal while four others: Nikki Anderson, Sophie Pawlyshyn, Corynn Grabau and Abby Kloiber each had a pair of shots and one on goal.

Just 32 seconds later, the Wolves would get their chance at a penalty kick, as Megan Fastenau slid her shot just past a solid diving effort by CSP keeper Ashlyn Waldon on the far left side of the frame.

Concordia held a slight 6-2 edge in first half shots despite playing into a steady wind accompanied by strong rain despite the Wolves holding possession for 55 percent of the half, with 61 percent of its possession time on the offensive side, while Concordia had 43 percent of its ball possession in the offensive half.

In the second half with the wind at their backs, Concordia attacked the net, firing 11 shots to NSU's four to finish 17-6 in the final overall shot margin. Concordia had nine shots on goal in the game to Northern State's two, including a 6-1 edge in the second half.

By game's end, total possession favored Northern State by a slim 51-49 margin with Concordia upping its time in the attacking half to 54 percent overall.

Concordia's defense held strong in the back in front of Waldon in limiting the Wolves scoring chances led by Tori Miller and Harper Smoot's 90 minutes while Haley Rudebusch added a solid 70 minutes.

But while Concordia held firm on its scoring chances, they also gave away possessions with a 14-6 deficit in fouls and 5-2 deficit in corner opportunities.

The Golden Bears are now 6-17-2 all-time against Northern State with the two programs trading wins since 2015 across the last six meetings and holding a 4-4 mark against each other since 2011, with today's tie keeping the recent series deadlocked. Concordia is 3-3-1 against NSU all-time at Sea Foam Stadium, as well (2009-present).
