CSP soccer returns home to faceoff with Northern State and Minnesota State Moorhead

Kickoff against NSU set for 7 p.m. on Friday and MSUM on Sunday at 1 p.m.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia- St. Paul women's soccer team (3-3-1, 3-1-0 NSIC) return home to Sea Foam Stadium this upcoming week with a pair of games against Northern State at 7 p.m. and MSU Moorhead at 1 p.m.

RECAP OF THE WEEK
The Golden Bears moved into third place in the conference standings after finishing the week 2-0 and extending their winning streak to three games.
 
On Friday, the Golden Bears traveled to Crookston and defeated the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles 2-0.
 
CSP scored their first goal of the when match when Sammy Ponsonby netted her first goal of the season off of a double assist by Abby Kloiber and Nikki Anderson in the seventh minute.
 
Jillian Nelson, N. Anderson, Katie Anderson and Sophie Pawlyshyn would all add shots on goal for the Golden Bears, who would end up outshooting the Golden Eagles 12-to-1 (five on goal) in the first half.
 
In the 77th minute, K. Anderson used a header off a corner kick from Pawlyshyn to extend the Golden Bears' lead to 2-0.
 
UMC would add their lone shot on goal in the 81st minute, but Golden Bears Goalie, Jessie Jordan, would collect it in the bottom right corner of the goal to secure the shutout for CSP.
 
The Golden Bears concluded their week with a 1-0 victory over the Bemidji Beavers in the Battle for "Priam the Pig".
 
The Beavers went into the match-up unbeaten at home in conference play for nearly six years and hadn't lost a regular season conference match since 2019.
 
K. Anderson led the Golden Bears in the first half with all four of their first-half shots. Her lone shot on goal in the half came in the 15th minute of play.
 
Waldon would record her first save of the game in the 42nd minute, as she collected the shot low from the Beavers in the middle of the goal.
 
As the first half was ending, the Beavers nearly broke the tie in the 45th minute with a penalty kick taken by Miah Olson after the Golden Bears committed a foul in the box. However, the shot would deflect off the left side of the goalpost and fall out of play.
 
In the 71st minute, K. Anderson scored her third goal of the season to give the Golden Bears the 1-0 edge over the Beavers.
 
A couple of minutes after the goal in the 73rd minute, the Beavers made a strong push down the field with a shot on goal, but Waldon was able to snag the attempt in the middle of the goal.
 
The Beavers would have one last attempt at a goal in the closing seconds of the match, but the shot would sail high and to the right of the goal.
 
K. Anderson was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week with her two goals, which included the game-winner against Bemidji State.
 
SEASON LEADERS
K. Anderson leads the Golden Bears and is tied for fifth in the conference with seven points. The junior has tallied three goals, which is tied for third in the league, and has an assist this season. She also ranks second in the conference with 35 shots and third with 13 shots on goal.
 
Pawlyshyn is second on the team with five points. The junior midfielder is currently tied for second in the conference with three assists and collected a goal (game-winner) against Wayne State. She is currently second on the team with 12 shots (seven on goal).
 
Grabau has two points on the season with a goal coming against Wayne State. She has the best shot-on-goal percentage on the team as six of her eight shots this season have been on goal.
 
Cannady also has a pair of points for the Golden Bears. She scored her first career goal against Wayne State after connecting on one of her two shots in the match.

Waldon is currently ninth in the NSIC with 21 saves in her six starts in goal for the Golden Bears. She holds a 3-3 record and has a 0.91 goal against average.
 
Captain Tori Miller has seen the field the most for the Golden Bears this season with 582 total minutes in her seven starts.
 
HISTORY BETWEEN CSP AND NSU
The two programs have met a total of 26 times dating back to October 23, 1999, and the Golden Bears hold a 6-19-1 all-time record against the Wolves. The Wolves won the inaugural match-up between the two schools with a score of 3-0 and claimed nine of the first 11 meetings. The Golden Bears would break into the win column with a 1-0 victory in Aberdeen, S.D. in 2006. CSP holds the largest margin with a 6-0 victory during their 2019 NSIC Championship run where K. Anderson scored a hat trick, Jessica Timpane recorded her first colligate goal and N. Anderson scored the game-winning goal in first 10 minutes. In the previous match, the Wolves claimed the 3-2 win with a game-winner coming off a penalty in the 63rd minute. K. Anderson would have a pair of goals in the match, giving her five total goals against NSU in her career.
 
ABOUT THE WOLVES
Northern State posted a 7-6-5 (6-4-4 NSIC) record in the 2021 campaign and was picked to finish 8th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 141 total points.
 
The Wolves are currently 4-2-1 (2-1-1 NSIC) this season and are currently in fourth place in the conference standings.
 
NSU kicked off the season in non-conference play with a pair of 1-0 victories against Montana State and Black Hills State. They would drop their non-conference finale on the road to the Southwest Baptist Bearcats by a score of 1-0.
 
The Wolves opened conference play with a loss on the road to Bemidji State, as the Beavers were able to net a goal in the 50th minute and use their defense to secure the shutout victory.
 
NSU would bounce back with back-to-back 4-0 victories against Minnesota Crookston and Wayne State.
 
In their last match, the Wolves would use seven saves to force a tie with the Augustana on their home turf.
 
Hannah Smith is the player to watch for the Wolves. She currently sits in a tie for third in the conference and leads NSU with three goals this season.
 
HISTORY BETWEEN CSP AND MSUM
The two programs have played a total of 25 times dating back to October 9, 1999, and the Golden Bears lead the series with a convincing 18-5-2 record against the Dragons. The Dragons took the first game of the series that still hold the largest margin of victory with a score of 7-1 in St. Paul. The Golden Bears claimed their first victory in the series with a 1-0 record in Moorhead. The Golden Bears have dominated the series in the past decade, winning the last 10 matchups and outsourcing the Dragon 33-to-6. Last season, the Golden Bears claimed a 4-0 victory over the Dragons in Moorhead. Ponsonby, Grabau and Timpane all scored in the match and Leah Engh was credited with assists in the match.
 
ABOUT THE BEAVERS
Minnesota State Moorhead posted a 1-15-2 (1-12-1 NSIC) in the 2021 campaign and was picked to finish 15th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 30 points. 
 
The Dragons are currently 1-3-1 (1-2-1 NSIC) this season and 12th in the NSIC standings.
 
After their scheduled season opener with St. Leo was canceled due to lightning, the Dragons fell 3-0 on the road to the Tampa Spartans in their only non-conference match of the season.
 
MSUM bounced back with a 1-0 win in their conference opener at Minnesota Crookston. The Dragons used a goal in the 32nd minute off a penalty kick to secure the low-scoring victory that saw 14 total saves in the match.
 
The Dragons would drop their next two matches against Bemidji State by a score of 1-0 and  against Augustana in a high scoring 4-3 loss.
 
Last time out, MSUM tied with Wayne State 2-2 in a match that saw all four of the goals scored in the first 29 minutes of the match.
 
Before they face CSP on Sunday, MSUM will hit the road to face #18 Minnesota State, who currently sits at the top of the NSIC standings. The match is set to begin a 4 p.m in Mankato, Minnesota.
 
Jensen Seidel is the player to watch for the Dragons. The freshman has a team best four points in her five starts this season. She has taken 11 shots this season and has been on goal with seven of them.
