The Golden Bears fall in non-conference play to McKendree 1-0

CSP soccer suffers first loss of the season

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Bears fell 1-0 in non-confernce action to the McKendree Bearcats on Saturday afternoon in a neutral site match at Harms-Eischeid Stadium on the campus of Upper Iowa University.

Junior Sophie Pawlyshyn led the Golden Bears (0-1-1) offensively with a team best two shots in the game, as they fell to the Bearcats (2-0-0) in the first meeting between the two schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Bearcats marched down the field for a pair of shots in the opening five minutes, Katie Anderson nearly connected with a shot that was saved near the top of the goal by the Bearcats keeper in the sixth minute.

A foul in the 32nd minute by the Golden Bears in the box led to a penalty kick and the lone goal of the match scored by the Bearcats.

Near the conclusion of the first half, Pawlyshyn and Sammy Ponsonby would both attempt shots that were unable to connect on goal.

After giving up seven shots in the first half, the Golden Bears slowed the Bearcats' offense with two shots in the second half. The Golden Bears also improved offensively in the second half with one more shot attempt than they had in the first.

Jessica Timpane and Pawlyshyn attempted to spark the Golden Bears' offense in the second half, but each of their shot attempts missed near the same location out the top of the goal.

Nikki Anderson's on goal shot attempt in the 78th minute was saved in the bottom center of the goal and was the final shot that CSP had on goal for the remaining 12 minutes of the match.

The last shot attempt for CSP came in the 87th minute by Mackenzie Leibiger. However, the Bearcat defense held on to complete the shutout and secured the 1-0 victory.
