Late equalizer secures draw in season opener

Anderson nets 89th minute goal to even the score at 1-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears soccer team (0-0-1) and the Rockhurst Hawks (0-0-1) battled for the full 90 minutes to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night's season opener at Sea Foam Stadium.

Junior Katie Anderson scored in the 89th minute of the match off of an assist by Sophie Pawlyshyn on a corner to tie the match at one goal apiece to secure the draw. Sophomore Jessi Jordan made six saves on the night in goal for the CSP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A pair of throw-ins in the opening minutes helped CSP march down the field to set up Pawlyshyn's for the first shot of the game that was blocked inside the goalkeeper box.

The Hawks answered with a pair of shots on goal in the ninth and 13th minutes, but Jessi Jordan would come up with her first two saves in the match after catching each of the two shots in the right corner of the goal.

Pawlyshyn put the first shot on goal for the Golden Bears in the 20th minute of play that was saved in the right corner of the goal by the Hawks keeper.

In the 25th minute, Nikki Anderson was inches away from putting the Golden Bears on the board, after she had a shot deflect off the right post.

The Golden Bears finished the first half outshooting the Hawks 8-to-5 with a pair of shots on goal. Jordan collected three total saves.

The Hawks came out of the locker room with a barrage of shots to start the second half, outshooting the Golden Bears 5-to-1 in the first 20 minutes. During this time, they scored the first goal of the match in the 56th minute off a corner kick by Gabby Hennessy.

K. Anderson tried to spark the CSP offense with four straight shots (one on goal) from the 66th to 71st minutes. However, the Hawks would respond again with five straight shots of their own to halt the momentum.

In the 88th minute, a corner kick from Pawlyshyn would set up K. Anderson for the tying goal of the match.

The Golden Bears would attempt two more shots in the final minutes, but the Hawks would hold the score to 1-1 as time ran out.
