ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul senior
Delaney Davidson came within a goal of the program's single game school record in leading the Golden Bears past Davenport 15-12 on Friday night at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
Davidson scored eight goals and added an assist, finishing one goal and one point shy of Maddie Hentges' record of nine goals and 10 points (joined by Alina Boyce) as Concordia improved to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the GLIAC following their second-straight win. Davenport falls to 10-4 overall and 3-2 GLIAC. The Golden Bears host #11 Grand Valley State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The last time they met two weeks ago, Davenport was ranked #23 in the nation and just last week, Davenport was ranked 24th in the IWLCA Top-25. This week, they dropped out of the top-25 and joined Concordia in the receiving votes section of the poll among the best programs in the country. The Panthers also entered tonight ranked #20 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Top-20 poll, slipping from the 18th position last week.
Davidson didn't waste any time, either, scoring the game's first goal. She factored into three of the first four goals of the game with two goals and an assist as Concordia opened up a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter, carrying a 4-1 lead at the quarter break.
The second quarter was the busiest of the night as the teams combined for 10 goals with Davenport coming back to force a 7-7 tie with under three minutes to play in the half. Senior
Mary Keating countered by putting CSP back in front with 1:53 to play in the half and Concordia never looked back.
The second quarter goal by Keating sent CSP into halftime leading 8-7 and was the start of a 5-1 stretch of play that gave Concordia its four goal margin back for the first time since it was 5-1 early in the second quarter, leading 12-8 with 6:40 to play in the third quarter. It was a timely response by the Golden Bears, as Davenport had just scored six of the previous eight goals in the second quarter.
The Panthers put two goals in late in the third quarter as CSP led 12-10 entering the fourth. Goals by Davidson (14:21) and Keating (13:20) pushed it back to a four goal lead early in the fourth quarter, and
Maddy Huebner turned in four fourth quarter saves against an aggressive Davenport attack to thwart the comeback.
Huebner was outstanding early with three saves and only one goal allowed in the first quarter, and four saves with two goals allowed in the fourth quarter. She finished with seven total saves and earned the win to improve to 5-2 in the cage.
Concordia also held a 17-14 edge on the draw including a key 8-3 lead in a second quarter that saw Davenport put together its best offensive play of the night, keeping the ball away from the Panthers as much as possible by securing the midfield.
Concordia also held Davenport to 9-14 on clear attempts while CSP cleared 14-of-16, important factors as CSP played with the lead and continued to keep possession.
Keating was strong in the midfield, picking up seven draw controls while adding a pair of caused turnovers and ground balls to go with her two goals. Sophomore
Hailey Hartlage added five draw controls and a pair of ground balls and senior
Sarah Pierson had a busy evening with two draw controls, three caused turnovers along with a 4-point offensive effort on two goals and two assists.
Freshman
Maddy Seifert pitched in a five point night with three goals and two assists and fourth year sophomore
Molly Moynihan continued to compile assists at a record pace, adding three on the evening on a night when CSP had assists on nine of its 15 goals.
The Panthers were led by Anna Glynn's seven points as she scored six goals while Ayanna Turrubiates (2g, 1a) and Aaliyah Miller (1g, 2a) each had three points.
