STRONG FINISH FOR THE BEARS
After opening league play 0-3 which extended the team's losing streak to six games, Concordia persisted and finished strong, winning four of its final five games to move into third place in the league standings, one spot ahead of where they were picked in the GLIAC Preseason Poll.
In the sprint for postseason seeding, Concordia closed out the year with a +39 goal margin, nearly a +8 margin per game. The string included a pair of wins over Upper Iowa along with a 15-12 home win over Davenport and a 13-10 win at Northern Michigan.
It was Concordia's second stretch winning 4-of-5 games of the season, going on a 4-1 stretch from the second through sixth games of the year for a 4-2 start to the season.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Concordia will make its second appearance in the GLIAC Tournament this weekend, holding a 1-1 all-time postseason record. The last time Concordia appeared in the GLIAC Tournament in 2019, CSP hosted Davenport in a quarterfinal round contest, defeating the fifth-seeded Panthers 15-9 in the program's first-ever playoff game. The fourth-seeded Golden Bears then fell at top seed and host #11 Indianapolis in the semifinals.
This year, Concordia's #3 seed is a new program-best in the club's second postseason appearance as well as the second GLIAC Tournament semifinal trip.
SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears and Panthers will meet for a 10th time this Friday, with Concordia leading 6-3 in the all-time series with their 15-12 home win on April 8 in the Concordia Dome snapping a 3-game skid against DU. CSP had won the first five meetings between the programs, winning a pair in 2018 and winning three times in 2019 including a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal win at Sea Foam Stadium. EARLY SEASON RANKING RECOGNITION & TOP-25 NOTES
The Golden Bears have received consideration in national polls for three straight years, being one of the programs "receiving votes" six times this year by the IWLCA Top-25 and four times by the Nike/US Lacrosse Top-20.
CSP had been featured in both polls the previous two years, and has played seven games against IWLCA Top-25 programs. So far, CSP is 0-7 against ranked teams in 2022 with the postseason remaining.
The Golden Bears are 1-25 all-time against nationally-ranked opponents, scoring their first win over a ranked team on February 21, 2020 at home against #14 Colorado Mesa (15-4). They've been within five goals in the final margin five times including twice this year. CSP has dropped its last 12 against ranked opponents.
The seven ranked opponents plus additional games against winning opposition has led to Concordia facing the third-ranked strength of schedule in the country, a cumulative 160-77 (.675) record with the Golden Bears playing near-.500 ball at 8-9 overall against the tough slate.
