MARQUETTE, Mich. - Paced by a balanced offensive attack and strong goalkeeping, Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse secured a 13-10 win at Northern Michigan on Wednesday evening at the Superior Dome.
The Golden Bears (7-9, 3-4 GLIAC) have now won three of their last four games heading into the season finale next Friday night, April 22 at 6 p.m. against Upper Iowa (0-8, 0-6 GLIAC) for senior night at Sea Foam Stadium, planned for the team's first open air home game of 2022. CSP also moves ahead of Northern Michigan for third place as NMU slips to 8-5 overall and 2-3 GLIAC.
Concordia put up three hat tricks on the day from seniors
Katie Moynihan and
Delaney Davidson along with freshman
Maddy Seifert who posted a team-high five points, adding two assists.
Fourth-year sophomore
Molly Moynihan finished second on the team with four points, scoring twice and assisting on two other goals while two others,
Erica Peterson and
Hailey Hartlage, rounded out the team's scoring with a goal and an assist apiece.
Junior goalie
Candace McDole turned in a huge performance in the cage in a tight contest, saving 14 shots while facing 35 total shots from the Wildcats. She put up a .583 save percentage and added a pair of ground balls. She surpassed the 100 save milestone (113), joining
Katie Lottsfeldt who achieved the feat three times (2017, 2018, 2019) as the only two to hit the milestone.
McDole produced five saves in the first and added four more in the third and fourth quarters. Her low save total quarter in the second (1) also featured her top quarter for goals against (1) as CSP took control of the game by outscoring the Wildcats 5-1 in the second quarter, turning a 4-2 deficit into a 7-5 halftime lead.
The Wildcats rallied back in the second half, holding CSP to one goal in a low scoring third quarter in which only three goals were scored, NMU with the 2-1 advantage. The edge continued into the fourth as NMU scored two of the first three goals in the first two and a half minutes to tie the game 9-9 with 12:37 to play following a 4-2 scoring stretch through the third and early fourth quarter.
The second half rally by Northern Michigan was entirely by the scoring from Twin Cities native Madeline Bittell, who had a game-high seven points and six goals.
But in the last 12 minutes of play, Concordia's seniors took control of the contest, with Davidson scoring the go-ahead goal for a 10-9 lead just 47 seconds after Bittell's sixth of the night that tied the game. Just over a minute later with 10:39 to play, Peterson scored her fifth of the year for an 11-9 lead.
Davidson struck again for three straight goals for the Golden Bears in a stretch of just one minute and 57 seconds of action, putting Concordia ahead 12-9 with 9:53 to go and stealing the momentum back.
Davidson now has 44 goals on the season, surpassing Kailey Heinl's 43 in the team's inaugural season in 2017 for the third most in a season. M.Moynihan became the first player in program history to achieve 30 assists in a season and now leads the team with 55 points on the year.
Concordia held NMU to just one goal down the stretch, coming with just under seven minutes remaining, and K.Moynihan put in her third goal of the game with 44 seconds to go to put the game away.
Overall, the game featured four ties but only one lead change as CSP never allowed NMU to get back on top after their first quarter lead.
The Golden Bears snapped a three-game skid against the Wildcats and improve to 7-3 in the all-time series.
