ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul opened up senior night with its six graduating seniors scoring the first nine goals of the game nine-plus minutes of play en route to a 24-1 win over Upper Iowa in the team's first outdoor home game of the season at Sea Foam Stadium on Friday night.
The Golden Bears, in their regular season finale, conclude the regular season 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC to slide into third place with wins in four of their last five games and are currently a half game ahead of Northern Michigan (3-4) with the Wildcats heading to #8 Grand Valley State (7-0) on Sunday in the league's final regular season game. Upper Iowa falls to 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the GLIAC.
Concordia will now await final seeding for the 2022 GLIAC Tournament, with the semifinals in the four team tournament held next Friday, April 29 with semifinal winners squaring off in the GLIAC Tournament championship on Sunday, May 1. The tournament location is slated to be held at GLIAC regular season champion Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan, pending an official announcement from the league office following the conclusion of the regular season.
With the Golden Bears honoring its six seniors, the team also featured its seniors in the scoring as each senior scored a goal for the six goals of the game starting with
Mary Keating (13:49),
Molly Moynihan (13:12),
Sarah Pierson (12:48),
Katie Moynihan (12:15 from Davidson),
Erica Peterson (11:29) and
Delaney Davidson (11:16) in a busy first four minutes of play.
Davidson scored another and was followed by
Molly Moynihan and Pierson for a 9-0 lead. On the nine goals, three were assisted, with seniors also assisting on the three goals (Davidson, Peterson & Keating).
Concordia would open up a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, adding four more goals in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth.
While seniors dominated play early, the final ledger showed balance as 12 different Golden Bears netted goals.
Three seniors produced six point performances:
Katie Moynihan (4g, 2a) and
Erica Peterson (3g, 3a) setting new career-highs with
Molly Moynihan (2g, 4a) also adding six points. Davidson and Pierson each had five points on four goals and an assist. Keating added a goal and an assist as all six seniors had at least two points.
Keating's stat line was also enhanced by her play in the middle, leading the team with five draw controls while adding four ground balls, one shy of Pierson's team-high five ground balls.
Hailey Hartlage led the underclassmen as the sophomore had three points on a goal and two assists, also adding a team-high four caused turnovers and matching Keating's four ground balls.
Overall, Concordia picked up a 28-10 margin on ground balls, 16-3 in caused turnovers and committed just 12 turnovers to UIU's 27. It helped offset Upper Iowa's 17-10 lead on the draw, allowing the Golden Bears to still hold a 38-4 shot margin.
On a night when she faced four total shots and just two on goal,
Maddy Huebner picked up the win in the net, saving one shot and allowing one goal.
The Golden Bears finished the night with 24 goals, the second-most in a game in program history and one shy of the program record while the 14 assists is the third most and two shy of the team record. The 38 points is the third-most, one fewer than the last meeting at UIU (4/2) and two shy of the school record.
