MARSHALL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul freshman
Lindsey Becher scored a career-high 31 points including the game tying free throws with 1.3 seconds left in regulation, but the Golden Bears ultimately fell 94-85 in double overtime at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday at the R/A Facility.
Concordia falls to 14-7 overall and 10-7 NSIC and now trails NSIC South Division leader by two games as the Mavericks (16-5, 12-5 NSIC) won at Sioux Falls. SMSU improves to 11-9 overall and 8-8 NSIC into a fourth place tie with Sioux Falls as the Cougars dropped their fourth-straight game.
Next, Concordia returns home to face Augustana on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Wayne State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Augustana has won three in a row and surged into third place in the NSIC South Division, trailing Concordia by one game while Wayne State enters the weekend in seventh in the South, trailing Winona State by a game for the final spot in the NSIC Sanford Health Tournament.
Becher's 31 points is the first 30-point game for CSP since
Sidney Wentland had a 34-point game on January 3, 2020. She tied the program's record for most field goals made (14) and attempted (26) in Concordia's Division II-era. She added seven rebounds, six blocked shots, two assists and two steals. She's blocked 17 shots against SMSU in two games this season.
She was also 3-4 at the foul line, but it was her two made free throws with 1.3 seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 67.
In overtime,
Sydney Zgutowicz took control after Becher was signaled for her fifth foul early on. She had five points, an assist and an offensive rebound that she drew the foul to get to the stripe.
She finished the game with 18 points on just five shots (3-5), hitting 11-12 from the foul line. She added eight rebounds and five assists.
Concordia had a pair of 4-point leads (73-69 and 75-71) during the first overtime and also held a 77-75 lead with 38 seconds remaining. But the Mustangs scored with 34 seconds left while the Golden Bears weren't able to get a shot off on their end, turning it over to SMSU on a shot clock violation with 4.5 seconds left, sending the game to a second overtime.
In the second overtime, SMSU scored the first five points and didn't look back. Concordia never had the ball while trailing by one possession the rest of the way, and the Mustangs made 12-of-13 from the foul line in the last five minute session to seal the win.
The game featured seven ties and five lead changes throughout, a small amount for a 50-minute double overtime contest. Concordia held the lead for just over 17 minutes while SMSU led for 22:25 of play.
Concordia held the early advantage with an 11-2 start while SMSU took control with its largest lead of 11 points in the third quarter, 54-43.
The Golden Bears stayed above 40 percent from the floor (42.9) and held SMSU under (38.9) for the game but the Mustangs made up for the shooting disparity by knocking down 10-23 from the arc (43.5) to Concordia's 3-10 (30.0) and also outscored CSP 28-16 at the foul line on 13 more attempts (36-23).
SMSU was led by Meleah Reinhart's 23 points as she padded her 7-21 shooting by making 9-of-10 at the stripe. A night after tying Becher's NCAA Division II single game high of 11 blocked shots against Minnesota State, Abuk Akoi added eight more rejections tonight, giving her 19 on the weekend. She added 15 points and nine rebounds as she flirted with the triple-double.
On a team that has five players averaging in double-figures on the year, the Golden Bears had just two reach double digits tonight despite the 10 extra minutes, but four others scored at least seven points with
Megan Gamble putting in nine points off the bench on 4-7 shooting while
Jadyn Hanson and
Riley Wheatcraft each had eight points.
