Gamble's game-winner propels Golden Bears

Concordia's fourth quarter comeback features game-winning layup by Gamble, block by Becher

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul freshman forward Megan Gamble finished in the lane with four seconds to play and freshman forward Lindsey Becher blocked Augustana's layup in the closing seconds to secure a 65-64 victory on Friday evening at Gangelhoff Center.

It was a critical win for Concordia, who solidifies their second place spot in the NSIC South and improves to 11-7 in the NSIC, moving two games ahead of Augustana (8-8) who falls to fourth, and 1.5 games ahead of Sioux Falls (9-8) in third. CSP trails NSIC South leader Minnesota State (13-5) by two games.

CSP, who is 15-7 overall, hosts Wayne State (9-12, 6-11 NSIC) tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. while Augustana (12-8 overall) heads to Minnesota State (17-5 overall).

Concordia trailed by eight, 64-56 following an Augustana three-pointer with 2:42 to play before the Golden Bears surged down the stretch with a 9-0 scoring run to win the game.

During the run, which opened with a Jadyn Hanson three-pointer on a feed from Becher, sophomore forward Sydney Zgutowicz added four straight free throws before Gamble's spin move in the lane to close it.

Concordia's defense held Augustana to 0-3 shooting from the field and 0-2 from three while forcing two turnovers down the stretch.

Zgutowicz led Concordia with her first 20-point performance of the year and second of her career, adding six rebounds and perfect 7-7 free throw shooting with three assists and three steals. She's reached double-figures in scoring in eight straight games and is 33-of-36 at the stripe across the last four games.

Becher finished with 14 points, adding a team-high eight rebounds and six blocked shots including the game-ending swat on Augie post Aislin Duffy on an inbounds play lobbed under the basket for the contest game-winning attempt.

Gamble, who had the game-winner, finished with six points on 3-6 shooting, adding four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 23 minutes off the bench including significant minutes down the stretch.

Concordia trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, falling behind 57-45 with 7:45 to play. The Vikings built their lead using a 19-6 stretch of play that covered over six minutes of action between the second and third quarters, overcoming CSP's 25-21 lead late in the second quarter to take a 40-31 lead midway through the third.

But the Golden Bears got hot at the right time, outscoring the Vikings 20-7 in the final 7:45.

Augustana had three players reach double-figures in scoring led by Viche' Rabb's 14 points on 3-11 shooting, adding six rebounds and five assists. Lauren Sees, the team's season scoring leader entering play (15.4), came off the bench due to a pregame injury and scored 13 points on 6-15 shooting while Augie's second leading scorer Aislin Duffy (15.0) had 10 points on 4-12 shooting.

The trio, who rank in the league's top-20 in scoring, finished with 37 of Augustana's 64 points but shot just 34.2 percent (13-38) from the field.

The biggest difference maker for Augustana was Kenzie Rensch with nine points, nine steals and seven rebounds, although she fouled out in 20-plus minutes of play.

For the Golden Bears, the bench effort was boosted by guard Alyssa Daugherty, who continues to scorch the Vikings. The last time out, her eight first half points sparked a run that helped CSP capture a road win. Tonight, she dropped in a pair of three-pointers and collected two rebounds in 12 minutes.
