WINONA, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball (17-7, 13-7 NSIC) outlasted Winona State (12-13, 9-12 NSIC) 50-47 on Thursday evening at McCown Gymnasium, picking up their third-straight win and securing the second seed from the South Division in the NSIC Sanford Health Basketball Tournament.
The 50 points scored is the lowest total in a victory since the 1986-87 season opening win over Macalester when CSP was known as the Comets and competing in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) at the NAIA level. Concordia won 559 games in between those two contests, scoring 51 or more points.
In addition to the three game winning streak, Concordia has been hot down the stretch, winning six of the last seven and have produced a winning record on the road (7-5) on the year. CSP is now 37-20 all-time against WSU and 14-7 at McCown Gym and have won seven of the last eight against the Warriors overall including three straight in Winona.
Although the Golden Bears picked up a road win, NSIC South leader Minnesota State clinched the division championship with a win at Upper Iowa, securing the second seed for Concordia.
Concordia returns home to Gangelhoff Center on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Upper Iowa for senior day. CSP is 9-2 at home on the season.
Second year freshman forward
Lindsey Becher led Concordia with 15 points and added eight rebounds and a blocked shot while fourth year sophomore forward
Sydney Zgutowicz had her seventh double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 5-9 from the field.
The Golden Bears held a 12-6 lead late in the first quarter, using strong early defense to stifle Winona State who made just 3-12 from the field to start the game. But a late first quarter basket for WSU sparked a 12-0 run as CSP's offense went cold in the second quarter.
Concordia scored just five points in the second, making 2-10 from the field in a quickly played first half that featured one total free throw attempt on a Becher three-point play to snap WSU's 12-0 run in the second quarter.
WSU led by as many seven points, 22-15, in the second quarter, the largest lead of the night for either team.
After scoring just 17 points in the first half, the Golden Bears were lucky to be trailing by just five points at the break. The offense came alive in the second half as CSP put together a 16-point third and 17-point fourth quarter.
Midway through the third quarter, with Concordia trailing 30-25, the Golden Bears surged ahead behind six straight points from Becher and a pair of late third quarter field goals by Zgutowicz during an 8-1 run to take a 33-31 lead into the fourth.
The Warriors responded with back-to-back three-pointers to open the fourth quarter, reclaiming a 4-point advantage.
But Concordia came back with another mini-spurt, scoring the next seven points with five coming from Zgutowicz while the defense held WSU to 0-5 shooting and forced a pair of turnovers during a nearly four minute stretch of play for a 42-39 lead with 4:12 remaining.
Not only did Concordia hold its lead the rest of the way, but CSP protected its margin by not allowing WSU to gain a possession with a chance to tie or take the lead down the stretch.
Concordia shot 38.3 percent (18-47) from the floor and a night in which they hit just 1-9 from three compared to WSU's 8-26 three-point shooting. The Golden Bear interior held WSU to 26.8 percent (11-41) shooting from inside the arc, though, and had a strong edge at the foul line as CSP went 13-17 to WSU's 1-2.
The Warriors were led by Emily Kieck's 14 points including three three-pointers, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Concordia point guard
Meghan DuBois added five more assists to her season line, along with seven rebounds and a steal with eight points.
