ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball (18-7, 14-7 NSIC) picked up another fourth quarter comeback on Saturday in the regular season finale at Gangelhoff Center, outscoring Upper Iowa (7-19, 4-16 NSIC) 18-4 in the last four and half minutes of play in a 70-64 win on senior day.
Armed with the second seed in the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament, Concordia will advance to the quarterfinals with a bye in the first round and will face the winner of N3 Bemidji State and S6 Winona State on Sunday, February 27 at 4:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Concordia faced its largest deficit, 58-49 with 5:39 to play in the game. Just over a minute later, freshman forward
Lindsey Becher's jumper started the 18-4 scoring run to close out the contest.
The Golden Bears hit 3-5 from the field and 1-2 from three down the stretch, but they did their most damage at the foul line, where they converted 9-of-13 in crunch time while limiting UIU to 2-10 shooting, 0-3 from the arc and kept the Peacocks off the free throw line.
Becher led the Golden Bears with 25 points and 12 rebounds, her third double-double and third 20/10 game of the year. She was 8-16 from the field and 9-12 at the stripe, adding five steals and two blocked shots.
The four Golden Bears honored on senior night all had a strong role in tonight's victory, too, as the group who has turned in four straight winning seasons all started along with the second year freshman Becher.
Sydney Zgutowicz turned in another strong offensive outing with 15 points, using 10-12 free throw shooting to offset her 2-11 from the field. She added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Meghan DuBois also finished with a strong all-around performance, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists and scoring 10 points with seven coming from the stripe.
Riley Wheatcraft caught fire in the fourth quarter, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to finish with 12 points, adding five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
Sydney Schultz added three points and collected six rebounds while adding a pair of assists. She led the team with a +17 effort in her 15 minutes of action.
The Golden Bears survived on a night when they shot just 31.0 percent (18-58) from the field, a figure boosted by their efficient fourth quarter in which they shot 46.2 percent (6-13).
The defense once again stifled the opposition, holding Upper Iowa to 30.9 percent (21-68) including 14.3 percent (3-21) from three.
The Peacocks were led by Lydia Haack's 17 points despite being held to 5-18 shooting as she made 7-8 from the line, adding five rebounds and four assists. Savannah Domeyer was the only other Peacock in double-figures with 10 points and six rebounds (five offensive) off the bench.
