ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball (16-7, 12-7 NSIC) enters the final week of NSIC regular season play with a split-site set of games, starting on the road on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Winona State (12-12, 9-11 NSIC) at McCown Gymnasium followed by returning home for senior night at Gangelhoff Center on Saturday against Upper Iowa (7-17, 4-14 NSIC) at 3:30 p.m.
NSIC IMPLICATIONS
It's a big weekend, as CSP is two games behind NSIC South leader Minnesota State (14-5 NSIC) for the South Division championship and top seed in the NSIC Sanford Health Tournament. The Mavericks face the same opposition, but in reverse order and at opposite venues, heading to Upper Iowa on Thursday and hosting Winona State on Saturday.
If the teams end up tied at the end of the season, CSP would hold the NSIC South Division regular season championship outright as MSU's winning percentage would drop by -.022 due to a 1-game nullification.
The top seed from the NSIC South Division will play its NSIC Sanford Health Tournament quarterfinal game on Saturday, February 26 against the N4/S5 winner at 7 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon, while the second seed will play on Sunday, February 27 at 4:30 p.m. against the N3/S6 winner.
Both teams have clinched at least a bye and the top two seeds in the South Division entering the final weekend.
SENIOR NIGHT
Prior to Saturday's game, the women's basketball program will honor four players as part of senior night:
Riley Wheatcraft,
Sydney Schultz,
Meghan DuBois and
Sydney Zgutowicz. The four players joined the program together in the 2018-19 season and have varying levels of athletic eligibility remaining, should they choose to continue competing after this season.
Together, they've secured four consecutive winning seasons, were NSIC South Division champions in their first year in the program with a chance to bookend that success in the regular season's final two games. They've finished in the top three in the NSIC South all four years, as well, with a first, a second and a third-place run prior to this season which is to be determined but no lower than second.
All four players have started at least 12 games each and have combined for 172 starts as a group among the 309 total games played across their careers.

SERIES HISTORY: CSP 36, WSU 20
The two programs meet for the 57
th time on Thursday with Concordia holding a strong 36-20 advantage since the series started in 1977-78. The two teams met 10 times between 1977-78 and 1998-99, CSP's last year in the NAIA before joining the NSIC, with Concordia holding a 6-4 record in its pre-Division II years.
Since Concordia has been an NSIC and NCAA Division II member in 1999-2000, the Golden Bears are 30-16 against the Warriors and 13-7 on the road at McCown Gymnasium.
In recent years, Concordia has dominated Winona State, winning six of the last seven with five of those played at home in the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, but the Golden Bears have also won their last two trips to Winona and haven't lost at McCown Gym since December 9, 2017.
Under head coach
Amanda Johnson (2016-present), Concordia is 8-6 with the Warriors defeating Johnson's CSP squad in four of the first five meetings before CSP flipped the results in recent years under Johnson. Johnson is 2-3 in five road trips to Winona.
LAST MEETING, DECEMBER: CSP 83, WINONA STATE 42
Concordia won its third straight game for a 5-1 overall start to the season, with the 83-42 win over Winona State being its first NSIC win of the season at Gangelhoff Center.
Lindsey Becher led four Golden Bears in double-figures with 18 points on 9-14 shooting, adding seven rebounds and five steals.
Riley Wheatcraft knocked down four three-pointers (4-6) and had three steals, and

Concordia held WSU to 31.0 percent (18-58) shooting including 1-20 from the arc while shooting 46.5 percent (33-71) from the floor and 35 percent (7-20) from three on the offensive end. Despite shooting over 15 percent better from the field, CSP also held a 20-14 margin on the offensive glass and 46-33 overall in rebounding.
Concordia had 15 steals on 21 Winona State turnovers and only committed 11 turnovers of their own for a 26-10 margin in points off turnovers and held a 20-10 margin in second chance scoring.
Taylor Hustad led Winona State with 13 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6-9 from the field. Off the bench, two Warriors, Ava Sergio and Alex Dorfeld, combined to make all five of their shots. Outside of those three players, the Warriors combined to shoot 7-44 from the floor.
ABOUT THE WARRIORS
Winona State enters the final week of the regular season currently in the fifth spot in the NSIC South, trailing Augustana for fourth (and a first round tournament home game) by a half game, and trailing third place Sioux Falls by a game. They also hold a one game lead over SMSU for the sixth spot and have clinched a spot in the NSIC Tournament.
They recently snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating SMSU 55-52 at home on Saturday, but prior to the three game skid, the Warriors had won four in a row against the NSIC North Division.
Taylor Hustad leads Winona State with 13.2 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting a league-leading 54.4 percent from the field. The team's point guard, Emily Kieck, has 101 assists (4.2/game) and is second on the team with 11.3 points per game while hitting 34.4 percent (32-93) from the arc. Emma Fee gives the team a third player in double-figures with 10.3 points per game, also averaging 6.4 rebounds and shooting 51.9 percent from the floor.
Caitlin Riley, averaging 9.4 points, is the team's top threat from the arc with 53 three-pointers made to rank second in the NSIC (53-158) and she connects at a 33.5 percent clip.
As a team, WSU is fourth in the league in field goal percentage (43.4) and fourth in fewest turnovers per game (13.5), also ranking fifth in scoring defense (64.2), fewest fouls (14.4) and free throw percentage (74.5).
SERIES HISTORY: CSP 29, UPPER IOWA 5
Concordia holds a firm grip on the series, winning 29 of the first 34 meetings dating back to the 2004-05 season as UIU was looking to join the NSIC, which they did for the 2006-07 campaign. CSP won the first 13 contests between the programs and has recently won the previous four, as well.
In 15 games played at Concordia's Gangelhoff Center, the Golden Bears are 13-2 against Upper Iowa and haven't lost at home to the Peacocks under head coach
Amanda Johnson in four contests. UIU's last win in St. Paul was December 12, 2015, just a few weeks before Johnson was tabbed as head coach in January of that season.
Johnson's Golden Bears hold a 10-2 record against the Peacocks since 2016.
LAST MEETING, DECEMBER: CSP 70, UPPER IOWA 61
The Golden Bears improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC with a 70-61 road win at Upper Iowa in December. Despite trailing early, a 16-0 run by CSP gave them a 19-9 lead at the quarter break, leading by as many as 16 (31-15) in the first half and holding a 14-point halftime margin.
Upper Iowa caught fire in the third quarter, hitting 11-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-6 from three-point range to tie the game at 51 late in the quarter before a free throw and a layup by
Riley Wheatcraft gave CSP a 3-point lead at the quarter break, starting a 6-0 run for a 57-51 lead early in the fourth.
Concordia didn't trail the rest of the way, although the Peacocks threatened, cutting the CSP lead to one on three different occasions down the stretch (57-56, 59-58, 61-60) with the last one-point lead at 2:41 to play in the game.
Wheatcraft and
Lindsey Becher combined for five free throws in a 40-second span in the last two minutes and
Jadyn Hanson made four free throws late and CSP's defense held UIU to one point in the last 2:41 of play to seal the win.
Becher led CSP with 14 points, six rebounds, four blocks and three assists while Wheatcraft had 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The CSP bench was clutch in the road win, as
Sydney Schultz and
Megan Gamble combined to shoot 6-11 from the field for 19 points with Schultz scoring 10 and Gamble adding nine.
Lydia Haack led Upper Iowa with a game-high 24 points on 9-17 shooting while Jessica Musgrave had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
ABOUT THE PEACOCKS
At 7-17 overall and 4-14 in the NSIC, the Peacocks are having their best since since the 2014-15 squad went 7-20 overall and 5-17 in the NSIC, the first of three straight years where UIU won at least four league games.
They are also getting hot at the right time, coming off of a weekend sweep at home over SMSU (68-51) and Sioux Falls (76-67) last weekend. They've also scored a big win over St. Cloud State (67-54) in January, showing the ability to knock off anyone in the league. But they've struggled on the road, going 0-9 with one more away game at CSP on the schedule, and have lost 16-straight road games dating back to an overtime win at St. Cloud State to open the 2020-21 season last January 2, 2021.
The Peacocks are not afraid to hoist three-pointers, leading the league in three-point attempts (558) while ranking fourth in three-pointers made per game (7.0). They are also the third-ranked rebounding team in the league (39.4), fourth in offensive rebounding (11.2), fourth in three-point defense as opponents shoot 29.7 percent from the arc, sixth in fewest turnovers committed per game (13.9) and sixth in free throw percentage (74.3).
Lydia Haack leads three Peacocks in double-figures with 12.5 points per game, adding 94 assists and 40 steals. Jessica Musgrave is close behind with 12.3 points and leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per game, adding 32 steals and shooting 78.6 percent from the line in a team-high 84 attempts. Brooke Evenson is the third in double-figures, averaging 10.5 points with 6.0 rebounds and a team-high 47 three-pointers made, shooting 33.8 percent from the arc.

SEASON STORYLINES:
HOT START TO 2021-22
The Golden Bears got out to a 6-1 start to the season, their best seven game start since the 2009-10 team opened the year 10-0 en route to a 26-6 finish and NCAA Central Region Tournament runner-up finish (Sweet Sixteen).
The start continued and swelled to 10-2 following the road win at #21 Minnesota State (more below) and is the best start through 12 games since that same 2009-10 squad opened the year 13-1.
BIG RANKED WIN
The Golden Bears entered the New Year with their first road win against a WBCA Top-25 team in head coach
Amanda Johnson's career, securing an 85-83 win at undefeated #21 Minnesota State on January 2 in Mankato. Coach Johnson holds a 3-11 record against nationally-ranked teams in her career since 2016, winning one on the road, one at home and one at a neutral site.
CSP's last win over a ranked team was on November 11, 2017, a neutral floor victory over Harding (Ark.) in Kansas City, Missouri. Coach Johnson is 1-6 against ranked teams on the road, 1-1 against ranked teams at a neutral site and 1-3 against ranked teams at home.
This season also includes a win over current #25 Sciences (Pa.), however they were unranked and receiving votes at the time of the game; as well as a win over the #5 team in NAIA on the road against Southeastern (Fla.).
COACH JOHNSON REACHES 100 CAREER WINS
Concordia-St. Paul head coach
Amanda Johnson secured 100 career wins, becoming the third coach in program history to reach the milestone following a 78-70 win over Northern State on January 28. She joins her predecessor Paul Fessler (2000-2015), who holds a 326-148 career record and Jack Surridge (1977-89) with a 199-124 career record as the only three coaches to achieve the milestone.
Coach Johnson is now 104-72 in her seventh season at the helm of the program, starting in January 2016 during the 2015-16 season. She is currently working on a fourth consecutive winning season and fourth-straight top-3 finish in the NSIC South Division with the Golden Bears.
