NSIC SOUTH STANDINGS: GOLDEN BEARS REMAIN IN THE HUNT
Concordia scored a big victory on Friday night at Sioux Falls as the two teams had been jostling for second in the NSIC South Division for multiple weeks. With the season sweep in-hand, combined with USF falling on Saturday at home to Minnesota State, pushes the Cougars to a tie for fourth in the NSIC South at 8-8 with SMSU, who swept MSU and CSP. Meanwhile, the Cougars have lost four straight, with Augustana (8-7) surging to third in the division and trailing Concordia (10-7) by a game.

It's an important distinction as the top two teams in each division receive NSIC Sanford Health Tournament First Round byes, while the third and fourth seeded teams will host a first round game on their campus sites against the fifth and sixth seeds from the NSIC North.

Of course, CSP still remains in the hunt for an NSIC South Division regular season title, trailing Minnesota State (12-5) by two games, but also holding the tiebreaker as the Mavericks will have their winning percentage adjusted by -.022 due to a 1-game nullification.

As travel partners, the Golden Bears and Mavericks continue to face the same schedule.

The NSIC Sanford Health Tournament tips-off with first round games at campus sites on Wednesday, February 23 before the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship will be held at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from February 26 to March 1 with the tournament champion receiving the NSIC's automatic berth to the NCAA Central Region Tournament.

SERIES HISTORY: AUGIE 19, CSP 15
The Golden Bears and Vikings enter their 35th meeting dating back to 1994-95 with the Vikings leading the series 19-15, although the Golden Bears have won two of the last three and the teams have split their last six contests.

Since Augustana joined the NSIC in 2008-09, the series is close to .500 with Augie holding a 15-14 edge while the margin in NSIC contests is similar with Augustana leading 13-12.

The biggest split is in home/away, where Concordia is 9-5 against the Vikings at Gangelhoff Center and 4-11 at Augustana where CSP secured a 73-71 win earlier this season.

Since Amanda Johnson was named head coach in January of 2016, Concordia is 5-7 overall and 3-3 in home games.

LAST MEETING, DECEMBER: CSP 73, AUGUSTANA 71
After a slow start that saw Concordia trailing 33-20 midway through the second quarter, the Golden Bears caught fire when a bench effort from Alyssa Daugherty (8 points), Megan Gamble (6 points, 4 assists) and Sydney Schultz (4 points) scored 18 first half points on 6-11 shooting while the rest of the team combined to shoot 7-24.

Daugherty scored all of her career-high eight points during a 16-4 run to trim it to a 1-point game late in the first half as the team hit 7-of-8 from the field during the run including a pair of Daugherty three-pointers.
It was the start of a 36-12 stretch of play between the second and third quarters that flipped the game in Concordia's favor with Lindsey Becher establishing her inside presence after halftime with three layups in the first 2-plus minutes of the third quarter to give CSP its first lead of the night, 42-41 during a 12-0 scoring run that saw Concordia open up a 50-41 advantage with 6:25 to play in the third.

During the 36-12 stretch of play covering 12:49 of game clock time, Concordia shot 16-26 from the field and 4-10 from three while holding Augie to 4-21 from the floor and 0-6 from three.

The Vikings whittled the score down late, and trailing by four with 16 seconds left, a quick layup and a steal on the inbounds set-up a potential game-winning three-pointer that was off the mark at the buzzer for the CSP win.

Sydney Zgutowicz led CSP with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the game while Meghan DuBois added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Becher and Gamble each had 10 points.

Augustana was led by Aislinn Duffy's 25 points and 14 rebounds and Lauren Sees pitched in 17 points.

ABOUT THE VIKINGS
Concordia's 73-71 win over the Vikings in Sioux Falls on December 11 left Augustana sitting with an 0-5 record to open NSIC play – all against the NSIC South Division, too. Since, they've defeated everyone in their path except NSIC North Division leaders St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth who have combined for a 32-4 league record and mopped up the NSIC South with a 15-1 record.

The Vikings have now won three in a row and nine of their last 11 which includes a non-conference win against Dakota Wesleyan before the holiday break.

Aislinn Duffy leads the NSIC and ranks 32nd in the country with nine double-doubles on the year while Lauren Sees leads the team in scoring with 15.4 points per game, ranking sixth in the NSIC. The Vikings are the only team in the NSIC with three top-20 scorers, as Sees and Duffy (15.0, 7th) are joined by Vishe' Rabb ranking 18th with 13.2 points per game.

Duffy and her 11.3 rebounds per game leads the Northern Sun and ranks 15th in the country while her 8.4 defensive rebounds per game is the nation's ninth best which helps the Vikings to a 15th-ranked defensive rebounding squad with 29.9 per game.

SERIES HISTORY: CSP 24, WSC 24
The Wildcats evened the series at 24 apiece with a 75-70 win in Wayne, Nebraska in December at Rice Auditorium, snapping CSP's 3-game winning streak in the series.

Entering the 49th all-time meeting starting when CSP joined the NSIC in 1999-2000, the Golden Bears and Wildcats are even at 11-11 at the Gangelhoff Center but have won just one of the last six meetings at home against WSC dating back to the 2013-14 season.

In 13 games against Wayne State since 2016, head coach Amanda Johnson and the Golden Bears are 6-7 against WSC overall and 1-4 at home.

The last four games in the series have been played at Rice Auditorium with CSP holding a 3-1 record in the recent meetings.

LAST MEETING, DECEMBER: WSC 75, CSP 70
The Golden Bears looked to make it four straight wins on the road against the Wildcats in December, leading by eight (61-53) with 7:11 left in the game. A Riley Wheatcraft three-pointer with 2:43 left put CSP back on top 68-66 but it was their last field goal of the game. She had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Concordia hit 2-of-4 from the stripe down the stretch and missed three from three from the arc in the last 1:29 of play. The Wildcats closed the game out at the foul line, converting 5-of-6 in the last 29 seconds and finished 24-of-28 in the game.

Wayne State was led by Lauren Zacharias who scored 12 points in the final six minutes to finish with a game-high 22 points while Kassidy Pingel had 18 points and nine rebounds, going 7-7 at the line and Kylie Hammer finished with 16 points on 6-6 free throw shooting.

Jadyn Hanson led CSP with a career-high 19 points on 7-14 from the field and 3-6 from three with 14 points coming in the second half. Lindsey Becher had 12 points and four blocked shots.

The closely contested game featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes with Concordia holding the lead for 60 percent of the night with WSC leading for under 10 minutes of play.

ABOUT THE WILDCATS
The Wildcats hit hard times after their 75-70 win over Concordia in December, dropping nine of their next 10 contests with a pair canceled. They've rebounded as of late, though, snapping a 7-game losing streak by sweeping Upper Iowa (74-72) and Winona State (87-84) in a pair of close wins at home last weekend. The win over Winona State was key for Wayne State at 6-10 in the NSIC, trailing the Warriors (8-10) for the sixth and final NSIC Sanford Health Tournament berth by one game in the standings with four games to play.

Wayne State is led by NSIC scoring leader Kylie Hammer at 21.3 points per game, ranking fifth in Division II women's basketball this season. She also leads the league in free throw attempts (141) and made (107), ranking in the national top-10 in each, as well. She's the top three-point shooter in the NSIC at 42.7 percent, ranking 22nd in the country while making 2.0 per game, seventh-most in the conference. Hammer became the 23rd player in WSC history to reach the 1,000-point milestone with her 26-point performance against Upper Iowa last weekend.

With Hammer among the nation's best at getting to the stripe and knocking down three-pointers, the Wildcats lead the league in free throws made (305) and are second in attempts (423) while ranking fifth in three-point field goal percentage (32.6) with the third-ranked three-point defense in the league (27.4).

Expect turnovers to occur on both sides when the Wildcats play, as WSC is third in the NSIC with 16.7 turnovers forced per game, while they also commit the most in the NSIC with 17.0 per game.

CSP TEAM STATS: GOLDEN BEARS AMONG NATION'S BEST IN BLOCKS
The Golden Bear defense has been strong all season, with its best coming from inside where the team is second in the league and 22nd in the country with 4.6 blocked shots per game.

The Golden Bears set a school record with 15 blocked shots in the December 17 win over Southwest Minnesota State, the second-most in Division II basketball this year and an NSIC single-game high. They topped 10 team blocks again in the rematch at SMSU on February 5 with 10 blocks in an overtime loss to the Mustangs.

BECHER A TOP BLOCKER
Second year freshman forward Lindsey Becher, the 2020-21 NSIC Freshman of the Year, is second in the country with a league-high 3.14 blocks per game including an 11-block performance to set a CSP record and falling one block shy of the NSIC record while establishing the top mark in Division II women's basketball.

The big performance helped her earn NSIC South Division Player of the Week honors, the second of three of the year for the program, joining Meghan DuBois who has the other two.

That weekend before the holiday break, Becher averaged 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 6.0 blocks, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals as CSP swept a big NSIC weekend from Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls. She was two rebounds shy of a triple-double against the Mustangs, going for 21 points, 11 blocks and eight rebounds before putting up 11 points, five rebounds, five steals and a block the next night against USF.

She continued her strong inside play after the New Year, blocking five shots in a road win at #21 Minnesota State while adding 12 points and eight rebounds on January 2. She added four more blocks in a road win the next time out at St. Cloud State, giving her 21 blocks in a four-game stretch of play.

She surpassed 100 for her career in January at UMary and already ranks among the program's top-10 (6th) with 114 in just 38 career games.

She holds the top-two single season blocked shots per game totals, averaging a program record 3.1 this year after averaging 2.8 per game last year in her debut season. Her 66 total blocked shots is the third most in a single season, two shy of Kionda Nicks' 68 blocks in 2014-15 for second, but she is still 36 away from the single season record of 104 set by Kionda Nicks in 2013-14.

She leads five players averaging in double-figures with 14.1 points per game while adding 5.8 rebounds per game, one of four players on the team to average least five rebounds per game.

Becher has scored in double-figures in 17 of 21 games and has scored at least eight points in every game this year. She's had four or more blocked shots nine times, had a block in 19 of 21 games and multiple blocks in 13 games.

She's had four 20-plus point games, scoring 21 points two times, the first with her 21 points and 11 blocks against SMSU, and the second with 21 points and nine rebounds against Bemidji State.

She had 22 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the year, adding three blocks in a road win at UMary and most recently poured in a career-high 31 points with seven rebounds and six blocked shots in CSP's overtime loss to SMSU on February 5.

She's a career 12.8 scorer with 5.6 rebounds and 114 blocks in 38 games (37 starts), averaging three blocks per game while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 72.9 percent from the line (102-140).

DUBOIS A TOP DISTRIBUTOR
Junior point guard Meghan DuBois leads the Northern Sun with 5.6 assists per game which ranks 12th in the country, is fourth in the NSIC in assist-turnover ratio (1.80), is fourth in the league in defensive rebounding (5.5) and sixth in the league in steals (2.24).

The point guard can also score, currently second on the team with 12.4 points per game, second on the team with 30 three-pointers at a 33.3 percent clip. She's also one of four players average five-plus rebounds per game with 5.8 and presides over an offense that has five players scoring in double figures.

DuBois has scored at least eight points in 18 of 21 games and reached double figures 15 times. She's had at least three assists in every game and had five or more rebounds 15 times. She's had a steal in 19 of 21 games and multiple steals 13 times.

She had her first double-double of the year in the second game of the season, a win over Northern Michigan with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals to secure NSIC Player of the Week honors after scoring 16 points with nine assists and seven rebounds in the season opener earlier in the week.

She added her second NSIC Player of the Week honor in CSP's last home weekend two weeks ago, averaging 20.0 points, 7.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of wins over Northern State and MSU Moorhead.

Defensively, she produced the third-most steals in a single game in Concordia's Division II-era (1999-present) with eight in a January win at UMary, adding five assists and seven points in the win.

She is durable, having played 40 minutes in a game six times this year and playing at least 30 minutes in all but one game.

As a Golden Bear, DuBois has 720 points, 309 rebounds, 286 assists and 133 steals in 82 games (60 starts) while her 2021-22 averages of 12.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.2 steals are all career-highs.

WHEATCRAFT FOR THREE
Two-time All-NSIC senior guard Riley Wheatcraft is the top perimeter scoring threat in a balanced Golden Bear offensive attack where all five starters average in double figures. She's third on the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game, she's fourth on the team with 5.2 rebounds per game and ranks fourth in the league with a 38.2 three-point percentage, ranking seventh in the league with 2.0 three-pointers made per game.

She's produced four 20-point games with a season-high 27 points in the team's road win at NAIA nationally-ranked Southeastern in Florida, also scoring 20 points including four three-pointers in a road win at #21 Minnesota State. She had back-to-back 20-point outings on the road, following up the MSU game with 20 points at St. Cloud State.

She's had 11 games scoring in double-figures, collected at least three rebounds in 19 of 21 games and had multiple steals 12 times this year. She's knocked down three or more three-pointers eight times this year, and made at least one three-pointer in 18 of 21 games.

She picked up her first double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss at Wayne State in December.

In her career in 86 games (60 starts), she's scored 929 career points with 346 rebounds, 141 assists, 123 steals and 64 blocked shots while making 150 three-pointers at a 37.7 percent rate. She's averaged in double figures three years in a row while her 5.2 rebounds is a career-best pace this year.

She ranks among the program's top-10 for career three-pointers made (7th) and percentage (8th).

ZGUTOWICZ ATTACKS THE GLASS
Sophomore forward Sydney Zgutowicz is the league's third leading rebounder with 8.1 per game and has seven 10-plus rebound games and at least five rebounds in 19 of 21 games on the year.

Her 11.4 points and 8.1 rebounds is nearly a double-double per game and she had registered a double-double in three four games from December 11 to January 2, averaging 15.5 points and 9.3 rebounds during CSP's four game winning streak.

In her last home game, she had a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double that included 5-9 shooting and 8-8 free throw shooting in a win over MSU Moorhead, her fifth double-double of the year.

Her scoring has picked up as the season has progressed, reaching double-digits in points 11 of the last 13 games and seven in a row, lifting her season scoring average from 7.8 on December 2 to its current 11.4 average, pouring in 13.5 points per game with 8.3 rebounds during the last 13 games.

Now in her third year on the floor and fourth in the program, Zgutowicz has 451 points, 316 rebounds, 99 assists and 51 steals in 60 games (34 starts). BENCH NOTES: MEGAN GAMBLE
Freshman Megan Gamble has become a stable presence off the bench in her first year as a Golden Bear. She scored 9-plus points three times in a four-game stretch in December including 10 points, four assists and three rebounds in the road win at Augustana where she clocked a season-high 31 minutes.

She had her third double-digit scoring effort with 10 points on 3-6 shooting and 4-4 foul shooting, adding three rebounds, a block and a steal in 22 minutes in an 85-83 win at #21 Minnesota State on January 2.

She earned her first start of the season in the fourth game, a win at Southeastern (Fla.), but was injured eight minutes into the game after grabbing three rebounds and dishing three assists. She did not return and missed the next seven games before returning for the win at #21 Minnesota State in early January.

She returned to the starting lineup on January 15 against Bemidji State, clocking 32 minutes and scoring seven points.

SEASON STORYLINES:

HOT START TO 2021-22
The Golden Bears got out to a 6-1 start to the season, their best seven game start since the 2009-10 team opened the year 10-0 en route to a 26-6 finish and NCAA Central Region Tournament runner-up finish (Sweet Sixteen).

The start continued and swelled to 10-2 following the road win at #21 Minnesota State (more below) and is the best start through 12 games since that same 2009-10 squad opened the year 13-1.

BIG RANKED WIN
The Golden Bears entered the New Year with their first road win against a WBCA Top-25 team in head coach Amanda Johnson's career, securing an 85-83 win at undefeated #21 Minnesota State on January 2 in Mankato. Coach Johnson holds a 3-11 record against nationally-ranked teams in her career since 2016, winning one on the road, one at home and one at a neutral site.

CSP's last win over a ranked team was on November 11, 2017, a neutral floor victory over Harding (Ark.) in Kansas City, Missouri. Coach Johnson is 1-6 against ranked teams on the road, 1-1 against ranked teams at a neutral site and 1-3 against ranked teams at home.

This season also includes a win over current #25 Sciences (Pa.), however they were unranked and receiving votes at the time of the game; as well as a win over the #5 team in NAIA on the road against Southeastern (Fla.).

COACH JOHNSON REACHES 100 CAREER WINS
Concordia-St. Paul head coach Amanda Johnson secured 100 career wins, becoming the third coach in program history to reach the milestone following a 78-70 win over Northern State on January 28. She joins her predecessor Paul Fessler (2000-2015), who holds a 326-148 career record and Jack Surridge (1977-89) with a 199-124 career record as the only three coaches to achieve the milestone.

Coach Johnson is now 102-72 in her seventh season at the helm of the program, starting in January 2016 during the 2015-16 season. She is currently working on a fourth consecutive winning season with the Golden Bears.

The Golden Bears have secured the NSIC South Division Player of the Week honor three times this year as junior point guard Meghan DuBois has earned the honor twice to match a league-high and Lindsey Becher earned the nod once.
