Golden Bears deliver victory on senior day

Ellison & Flomo post big offensive performances in the win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul (1-10 NSIC, 1-5 North) wide receiver Troy Ellison hauled in a 72-yard touchdown from quarterback Conner Cordts with 5:44 to play in the second quarter, giving the Golden Bears a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the day in a 19-11 senior day win over Minot State (1-10 NSIC, 1-5 North) on a cold, gloomy Saturday at Sea Foam Stadium.

Ellison finished with his second-straight 100-yard receiving game, hauling in five receptions on six targets for 113 yards and two touchdowns, adding a 30-yard score in the third quarter to extend CSP's lead to 13-3.

It's the first back-to-back 100-yard receiving performance since Cordell Smith had 2-100 with two touchdowns in the 2011 finale against Southwest Minnesota State and 8-147 with a touchdown in the 2012 season opener against UMary and the first receiver to secure 100-plus yards twice in the same year since MJ Williams in 2018 (7-115 vs Northern State & 5-105 vs SMSU).

Ellison, a redshirt freshman, finished his debut season with team-highs of 29 catches for 402 yards and five touchdowns.

The scoring for Concordia was capped by running back Gayflor Flomo who hauled in a 43-yard touchdown reception from Cordts late in the third quarter for a 19-3 lead. Flomo finished the day with 16-84 rushing including a 21-yard run up the middle late in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice. He had a pair of catches for 42 yards and led the team with 126 all-purpose yards.

Cordts completed 14-21 for 212 yards and three touchdowns on the day, finishing his first full season with 2,108 passing yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 236 yards and three more scores.

The Golden Bear defense stifled the Minot State ground game as Ali Mohamed, the 2021 NSIC rushing leader, had 18 carries for 33 yards, averaging 1.8 per carry. Overall, Minot State had just 51 rushing yards on 31 carries for a 1.6 average.

The defense also performed well against the pass, limiting the Beavers to 189 yards on 22-46 passing while sacking Dawson Macleary three times.

CSP held Minot State to 240 yards of total offense and 3.1 yards per play, overcoming Minot's consistent third down effort as the Beavers converted 11-of-21, but came up empty on four fourth down attempts including a big sack in the fourth quarter by senior safety Alex Andrade, who tallied four tackles on the day.

Junior linebacker Andrew Egnarski finished with a team-leading 10 tackles, adding 1.5 for loss and a pair of quarterback hurries. His day was punctuated with a strong tackle to thwart Minot State's fake punt attempt, hitting punter Justin Cash for a 1-yard loss. Egnarski finished the season with double-digit tackles in each of the final six games and produced 97 total tackles in nine games on the year.

The team's other two sacks on the day came from senior Luke Dunsmoor and a share between Javon Jones and Koffi Gbekle.

On special teams, punter Parker Dahlman averaged 36.6 yards on five punts on a challenging day to kick, adding a pair of punts inside the 20 and a long of 53 yards. The return game featured a 39-yard kickoff return from Andrade, who averaged 32.5 yards on a pair of returns while senior Joey Farley had a 10-yard punt return.
