ST. JOSEPH, MO. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (0-2) fell on Sunday afternoon to Emporia State University (Kan.) (2-0). The 5-2 loss against the Hornets concludes CSP's participation in the Stoney Creek Hotel Classic this weekend where they went 0-2.
ESU took a victory in the first ever matchup between these two squads. The win was also the Hornets second win of the weekend after defeating Rockhurst University (Mo.) on Friday, 1-0.
Early on, the Golden Bears took a 2-1 lead, creating a sense of comfortability. "It was an interesting game- then a CSP red card [on
Mackenzie Leibiger] created some chaos. We struggled to keep the ball and create chances," said Head Coach
Steve Bellis.
Due to the foul, ESU was awarded a penalty kick. Dimarco took the kick and found the back of the net, evening the score, 2-2. She would go on to score again at 4-2 for her second goal, becoming the match leader in scoring.
CSP's goals came from redshirt freshman
Abby Kloiber and true freshman
Brittany Bordson, both of whom nabbed their first career goals for the Golden Bears and found the score sheet for the first time this season.
Two late goals in the 86
th solidified the win for the Hornets, who outperformed the Golden Bears on the pitch. CSP still managed 10 total shots, three corner kicks, and
Jessi Jordan made four total saves despite the defeat.
As the team prepares for its home opener Head Coach Bellis noted, "Moving forward, we know we can build on this weekend and find some consistency." The team is adjusting still after not having competition last season, coupled with the addition of the 2020 and 2021 freshmen classes.
The home opener will be on Sunday, Sep. 5 at Sea Foam Stadium against Rockhurst (Mo.) (0-2).
