Golden Bears roll to 7-0 win in home opener

CSP picks up second largest margin of victory in DII era

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Concordia-St. Paul women's soccer team improved to 1-2 on the season with a 7-0 win against Rockhurst (Mo.) (0-3) on Sunday afternoon. Katie Anderson with two goals led her team and was deemed Head Coach Steve Bellis's Player of the Game.

A goal in the 38th minute by Jessica Timpane gave the Golden Bears the lead and gave Timpane her first goal of the season, her second at CSP.

The second half proved to be fruitful for the Golden Bears. Goals by Katie Anderson (52nd minute, 65th minute), Jena Berkland (61st minute), Corynn Grabau (69th minute), Bethany Weller (79th minute), and Sammy Ponsonby (85th minute) all aided to a historical win at Sea Foam Stadium. The 7-0 win ties for the second best win in program history, mirroring a 7-0 win against Presentation (S.D.) on Oct. 9, 2014.

The only better win for CSP came against Robert Morris (Ill.) on August 29, 2009 with an 11-0 win margin.

Coach Bellis said that the win today gave many players decent playing time, as well as the opportunity for some new players to get some goals on the board.

Katie Anderson moves to three goals and leads her squad, while Timpane, Berkland, Grabau, Weller, and Ponsonby will all tab their first of goals of the season.

Defensively, Tori Miller and Cayla Renwick played 80 and 78 minutes, respectively.

Goalkeeper Jessi Jordan picked up her first career shutout and made four saves on the afternoon.

The Golden Bears boasted 32 total shots, facing two Rockhurst keepers. The CSP squad also took eight corner kicks, one of which led to a header goal by Anderson from Pawlyshyn. Rockhurst managed only seven shots and seven corner kicks.

The large margin of victory on Sunday will be a huge confidence boost for the team as they head into NSIC league play this week, said Coach Bellis. The Golden Bears will face off in their first conference match this Friday, Sep. 17 at Augustana (S.D.). Kick off is set for 4 p.m. and a live stream will be available at nsicnetwork.com/cspbears.
