LAST TIME OUT
Over the weekend at Veterans Field, the Golden Bears took three of four from Minnesota Duluth to claim their second consecutive series win to start the year.
On Saturday, CSP shut out UMD for 16 innings on Saturday as they picked up a pair of sweeps at Veterans Field. The Golden Bears took game one 1-0 and game two 7-0. Concordia's quartet of pitchers,
Griffin Lapp,
Luke DeGrammont,
Connor Hurley and
Eric Lundell, held the Bulldogs to a .151 batting average with eight hits in 53 at-bats while registering an 18-to-3 K/BB ratio on the day.
On Sunday, CSP bounced back from a 4-1 10-inning loss in game three to claim a 5-4 comeback win in the series finale. In the second game of the day with Concordia trailing 4-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth,
JT Hoffmann delivered his first career hit in style as he tied the game with a grand slam to completely change the tone of the game. The Golden Bears added a run in the fifth to claim the series win.
For the weekend,
Matt Pietsch paced the offense with a .500/.500/.667 slash line over the four games, collecting six hits, including a pair of double, in 12 trips to the plate.
Ryan Christopher added four hits and a pair of walks while swiping three bags in the series.
UMARY SERIES HISTORY
Heading into Thursday's matchup, the Golden Bears hold a 29-6 record in 35 meetings with the Marauders. Concordia's best stretch in the series came from 2009-16 as CSP won 20 consecutive meetings during that span. Since then, Concordia has claimed six wins in nine contests, including four of the last five. In 11 neutral site meetings, the Golden Bears have gone 10-1.
LAST MEETING WITH THE MARAUDERS
Back on April 9, 2019, CSP and UMary split a midweek series in Bismarck, N.D. The Marauders cruised to a 6-1 win in game one before the Golden Bears bounced back with a 7-6 win in 11 innings in game two.
In the second game of the day after jumping out to an early lead and remaining out front for much of the contest, the Golden Bears claimed the decisive edge in the 11th to pick up an extra-inning victory and a split of the day.
CSP took advantage of four UMary errors along with eight hits and six walks of their own to score seven runs in the second game of the day. For the second game in a row, Concordia had six different players register hits as
Ben Suits and
Carter Schmidt led the way with two apiece. Suits also added a walk and a pair of RBIs while Schmidt scored a run.
Steven Nessler drove in two runs as he finished 1-4 while
Patrick Bordewick drove in a run as well and extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Josh Gaworski got the start for CSP as he worked the first 5.2 innings in a no-decision before giving way to the bullpen. The right-hander struck out seven and allowed four hits in the outing.
Blake Stelzer followed with 3.1 innings in relief and did not allow a run until a two-run game-tying homer in the ninth. Those two were the only runs allowed by the Golden Bear bullpen as Stelzer struck out seven with no walks in the game.
Shane Benson (2-1) followed with an efficient performance to claim the win as he did not allow a hit or a walk over 2.0 innings, striking out three.
