ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul Hearthstone team (6-0) completed a perfect regular season in the NACE Hearthstone Spring Collegiate Championship as they swept Texas A&M-San Antonio (6-1) on Tuesday night.
Impressively, the Golden Bears did not drop a single game in the entire regular season slate as they compiled six 3-0 victories to move into the postseason riding high.
In the regular season finale, the Golden Bears opened with their warrior deck against TAMUSA's shaman deck. The Jaguars chipped away early to hold a slim advantage heading to the middle turns, but CSP quickly shifted the momentum as they built a large shield to go along with significant board control. Texas A&M-San Antonio was unable to clear that board as Concordia delivered the final 17 damage in a big turn eight to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
CSP called on their rogue deck in the second game while the Jaguars went right back to their shaman deck. Game two followed a similar script as the two teams poked away at each point over the first few turns before a massive midgame turn gave the Golden Bears the victory. With Concordia holding a 25-22 health edge and TAMUSA holding a minion edge heading to turn seven, the Golden Bears used a lethal combo of card damage and buffing of minions to finish it off in one turn to jump out to a 2-0 lead on the night.
Concordia looked to complete the sweep with their mage deck matched up against the paladin deck for Texas A&M-San Antonio. It was another even start with both teams setting up their boards and trading blows as TAMUSA held a slight 18-14 edge heading to turn nine. The Jaguars were able to recover 10 health with lifesteal on their turn, but the Golden Bears maintained board control along with some serious firepower in their hand as they completed the sweep with a big turn 10.
The Golden Bears await their opponent in the first round of the playoffs scheduled to start next Tuesday as CSP is certain to earn one of the top seeds in the tournament.
